What Does It Mean to Ask in Jesus' Name? (John 16) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study

In this episode we talk about the ache of goodbyes and how the disciples felt as Jesus prepared to leave them. Jesus doesn't ignore their fear. He promises the Holy Spirit and a joy no one can take away. We also look at what it really means to ask in Jesus' name and how surrender opens the door to peace.

"Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full." (John 16:24)

Questions this episode answers

What does it mean to ask in Jesus' name?

Asking in Jesus' name is not a phrase we tack onto the end of a prayer. It means praying in line with His character and His will, out of a relationship with Him. As we abide in Him, our requests begin to reflect His heart.

Why did Jesus say it was better for Him to go away?

In John 16:7, Jesus said that if He went away, He would send the Helper, the Holy Spirit. The Spirit guides us into truth, comforts us, and lives within every believer. That is why His leaving was for our good.

How can I have peace in hard times?

Jesus told His disciples they would have tribulation in the world, but to take courage because He has overcome the world (John 16:33). Peace comes from being rooted in Him, not from controlling our circumstances.
