Today we sit with John 19 and the weight of Jesus' suffering and crucifixion. What did Jesus mean when He said 'It is finished'?

The Greek word tetelestai means completed or paid in full. Jesus was declaring that the work the Father gave Him, paying for our sin, was done. Nothing needs to be added to what He accomplished on the cross.

Did Pilate have power over Jesus?

In John 19:11, Jesus told Pilate he would have no authority over Him unless it had been given from above. Even during the trial, God was in control. His plan to redeem us was unfolding through events that looked like defeat.

How can I trust God when I feel powerless?

Jesus entrusted Himself to the Father in great suffering, and He still cared for His mother from the cross. We can follow His example by surrendering control and timing to God. He is at work even when we cannot see it.
