History of the Lottery

We've all day-dreamed about hitting the Powerball or Mega Millions or whatever your neck of the woods calls the Lottery, but where did this all originate? It's something so engrained in our culture it's something we could assume has always been around. Well you'd be partially correct in that assumption but the lottery as it exists today looked very different in ancient times and served a very different purpose.
