Dean Kamen invented the Segway Human Transporter, a high-tech scooter. The scooter relies on sensors, sold-state gyroscopes, and softwear to produce a balanced ride even over rough terrain. The price tag is around $5,000. Kamen's other inventions include a portable drug-infusion pump, a compact dialysis machine and a wheelchair that can climb stairs. Kamen heads DEKA Research & DevelopmentCorporation in New Hampshire. Elizabeth Neuffer died last week in Iraq from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was reporting on the country's efforts to rid itself of the influence of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party. She was 46 years old. Neuffer was the Globe's Foreign Affairs/UN Correspondent. She reported on the fall of the Soviet Union, as well as ethnic strife in Bosnia, Kosovo and Rwanda. She's also reported on the war on terrorism from Afghanistan. Her book, The Key to My Neighbor's House: Seeking Justice in Bosnia and Rwanda, is about the war crimes tribunals and the efforts of victims to find justice.
