Former WWII P.O.W. Eric Lomax and Cajun musicians Luderin Darbone and Ben Sandmel on this archive edition of Fresh Air. Eric Lomax was captured by the Japanese during World War II. He was used as forced labor to help build the Burma-Siam railroad. He was also tortured by the Japanese. He has reconciled with the Japanese interpreter present during his beatings. His book The Railway Man: A P.O.W.'s Searing Account of War, Brutality and Forgiveness chronicles his story from WWII and his life 50 years later. Fiddler Luderin Darbone founded the Hackberry Ramblers in 1930, making it the oldest existing Cajun Music group. Their biggest hits were "Quitrter la Maison", "Cajun Crawl", and "Jolie Blond." Their 1995 release, Cajun Boogie, produced by then-47-year-old Ben Sandmel, the band's youngest member, features guest vocals by Rodney Crowell and fiddle solos by Beausoleil's Michael Doucet.
