Summary:
The European economy is teetering this week, but theres one place in Europe where the good times are rolling: Basel, the site of the continents oldest and biggest contemporary art fair.
Next, thus far in Studio 360's Redesigning Canada project, we've tried to gauge how much Americans know about their neighbor. (Not much.) Canadians told us what they think we should know about them. And weve received hundreds of submissions for our national slogan contest that put a new spin Canada's image.
Then, a couple years ago, when the writer Joel Stein found out he and his wife were expecting a son, he worried that he lacked the manliness to properly raise a boy. Just worrying about such a thing indicates that theres a problem, and Joel admits that he prefers listening to show tunes to watching sports. He never learned to fish, hunt, or fist fight. So Joel set out to fix that: he rode with firefighters, survived three days of Army boot camp, and even got punched by an Ultimate Fighting champion. He wrote about these experiences in his new book, Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masculinity.
Following that, Sam Zimmerman was not an emotional man except when it came to opera. He could discourse on Caruso and Callas at length, analyzing the range, the purity of the voice, and the mysterious quality called presence. He passed along that love to his son, Ed, who as an adult discovered something strange: it was a good tool for a corporate lawyer. In honor of Father's Day, Ed remembers his father and the music that kept them together until the end.
Then, todays artificial limbs function better than they ever did, but from an aesthetic standpoint something is lacking. A standard prosthetic leg is a jointed metal pole with a plastic foot at the end. There's nothing wrong with the design, says industrial designer Scott Summit. It simply looks to me like a job that's half complete.
And finally, Jesmyn Ward was at the tail end of summer break when Hurricane Katrina struck her hometown of Delisle, Mississippi, on the Gulf Coast. She was supposed to be back in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to start teaching, "but because Im always so homesick, she tells Kurt Andersen, I thought, Ill just stay here till the last moment. Ill stay here through the hurricane, then Ill drive up to Michigan. I totally underestimated the storm." Ward and her family had to escape a house filling with water so quickly they feared they would drown in the attic. [Broadcast Date: June 16, 2012]
