Unemployment is down, job creation is up, and the auto industry practically left for dead three years ago is healthy. The economy finally seems like it's getting back on track, but on television, the Great Recession is the backstory of everything from reality shows to sitcoms.
Then, this weekend the country formerly known as Burma is holding democratic elections the countrys first legitimate elections in decades ending the 50-year isolation of the country. Everyone there has something at stake including a trio of punk rockers who call themselves Side Effect.
After that, Lionel Shrivers novel The New Republic is maybe in a genre by itself: a comedy about terrorism. When I finished the novel in 1998, she tells Kurt Andersen, I did try to publish it, and I just couldnt stir any interest. After September 11, on the other hand, publishing this book immediately after 9/11 would have seemed like jumping on the bandwagon and furthermore it would have seemed tasteless. Because its funny. I really had to wait until now to publish this book.
Following that, last week we announced our Significant Object story contest. We picked out three objects from a thrift store: a doll ($5), a thermos with the Marlboro logo ($5), and a wooden trinket ($1). We want you to perform creative alchemy, turning the junk into treasure by giving it a backstory. It can be in the form of a short story, poem, encyclopedia article, comic you choose.
Then, every piece in Swept Away, an exhibition at New Yorks Museum of Arts and Design, is made up made of dirt, dust, trash, or pollution: Stuff we leave behind, or deem unclean, or strive to remove or discard or disguise or hide.
And finally, if you ever watched The Dating Game, you know his music and now you cant get it out of your head. After a half-century in the music business, legendary bandleader, trumpeter, and producer Herb Alpert is still performing and writing new music. His latest album, recorded with his wife Lani Hill, is called I Feel You. [Broadcast Date: March 31, 2012]
