Learn Igbo: A Widow's Silence — What She Is Allowed to Feel | Igbo Daily Drops (S3 E153) Week 31
Om avsnittet
Three days. A mat on the floor. And a feeling with nowhere to go.
In this episode of Igbo Daily Drops, you'll learn 3 phrases for naming your
feelings out loud — anger, fear, and asking someone gently how their heart
feels.
This episode follows a fictional widow, Chiugo, through the mourning
expectations placed on her by her late husband's family in Nnobi, Anambra
State — and the moment she finally names, privately, what she is carrying.
Widowhood customs vary widely across Igbo communities, denominations, and
households; this episode does not claim to describe a single universal
practice.
Research in this episode draws on Joseph-Thérèse Agbasiere, Women in Igbo
Life and Thought (Routledge, 2000); Sarah Lamb, White Saris and Sweet
Mangoes (University of California Press, 2000); and Kenneth J. Doka's
1989 concept of "disenfranchised grief."
📖 Today's proverb: Anya na-ebe akwa, ma obi ma ihe ọ na-ebe — The eyes
shed tears, but the heart knows the true reason why it weeps. (Verified.)

practices vary widely across Igbo communities, denominations, generations,
and individual households. This episode uses fiction to practise emotional
vocabulary, not to describe a single universal Igbo custom.
