Before a word is spoken, the colour in her hands has already

told the whole compound what today means.

In this episode of Igbo Daily Drops, you'll learn 3 phrases for

naming colour — and discover that in Igbo tradition, colour was

never decoration. It was a message.

Eleven-year-old Ebele is trusted for the first time to carry a

ceremonial pigment bowl at her great-uncle's title-taking in

Nimo, Anambra. Nzu (white chalk), uhie (red camwood) and odo

(yellow camwood) once formed a complete communication system in

Igboland — offered, worn, and read like sentences. This episode

documents that system as intangible cultural heritage, and

teaches the vocabulary of colour to diaspora learners worldwide.

Research in this episode draws on Nkwuda, J.I. (2018), Ebonyi

State University — whose survey found fewer than three in ten

Igbo people still use nzu, uhie and odo to communicate at all.
