Learn Igbo: Group Intentions — The Grammar That Moves Before You Do | Igbo Daily Drops (S3 E133) Week 27

A voice note lands. Twenty-two hours later, two children in Peckham are giving each other orders in a language their mother is still teaching them.

In this episode of Igbo Daily Drops, you'll learn three plural-future phrases — the grammar Igbo families have always used to mobilise a household before anyone has to be told twice.

This episode documents a piece of Igbo intangible cultural heritage hiding inside the grammar itself: the plural pronoun anyị, and the clitics that decide, instantly, who is inside a circle of obligation and who is outside it. For an endangered language, that isn't trivia — it's the architecture of how belonging survives migration.

Research in this episode draws on E. Nolue Emenanjo, A Grammar of Contemporary Igbo (2015) — his work on Igbo pronominalisation and cliticisation shows that "we" in Igbo is never left to assumption, the way it often is in English.
