At the ancient iron-smelting site of Opi, near Nsukka, craftsmen worked a

tradition of intangible cultural heritage stretching back nearly three thousand

years. This episode documents that endangered knowledge while teaching

conversational Igbo to diaspora learners worldwide — part of the archive's

ongoing work in African heritage renaissance and cultural understanding

through education.

Research in this episode draws on Edwin Eme Okafor, University of Sheffield,

1992 — whose doctoral research radiocarbon-dated iron smelting at Opi to

nearly 2,700 years ago, and found smelters and blacksmiths operated as

distinct, specialised trades.
