Iri Ji, the New Yam Festival, is one of the most resilient

pieces of Igbo intangible cultural heritage — and one of the

most travelled. This episode documents its newest geography:

Malmö, Sweden, where there is no yam farm for a thousand miles

and the festival happens anyway. This is the endangered language

and cultural preservation story of a community that rebuilds its

ceremony wherever it lands.

Research in this episode draws on Igbokwe & Ahumaraeze (2019),

Federal University of Technology Owerri — documenting Iri Ji as

one of the Igbo cultural practices that migrates intact across

the diaspora.
