Nearly nine decades ago, a Nigerian man's hoe struck ninth-century bronze

while he dug a cistern in his own compound. The excavation site that made

him famous still carries his family's name — Igbo Isaiah — though for most

of those decades, almost no one asked his descendants what the discovery

had cost them, or given them. This episode documents Igbo intangible

cultural heritage and the living practice of correcting an endangered

language's own historical record from within.

Research in this episode draws on Ubah, M.C.K. et al., Azania: Archaeological

Research in Africa (2025) — a paper co-authored by Igbo-Ukwu's own site

landowners and heritage council, naming Isaiah Anozie as the 1938 discoverer

of the Igbo-Ukwu bronzes, decades before the formal 1959 excavation.
