An educational, informative, and irreverent look at all things Beatles with Dave and Chris.
In this episode, we go back into the lab to talk about two "Yoko" songs by John Lennon: "Oh Yoko" from 1971's Imagine and "Dear Yoko" from 1980's Double Fantasy. As usual, we discuss the lyrics, the context, the music, and cover versions. Which song do we like better? Which one works better in context on their respective albums? Are there any interesting cover versions of such personal songs?
We also catch you up on some more news (Recorded 4/19/25).

Apart from Yoko Ono, probably no other figure in the Beatles story is as divisive and hated as much as Allen Klein. Klein was brought into clean up the business disaster that was Apple, and to get a better contract and more money for the Beatles. After his work with Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, and others, the Beatles gave Klein a chance to improve their finances in 1969-70, with agreements that lasted for the next several years. In this episode, we dig into the background of Allen Klein, his rise to prominence, his work with The Rolling Stones, and of course shine an extensive light on his rise and fall with the Beatles as a group and as solo artists. Is he really the villain we've been led to believe he was? Or did he do some good things for the group? Listen and find out!

In this episode, we explore an early European gig the Beatles played in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 30, 1963. Their appearance on the TV show Drop In marked the final stop of their first Scandinavian tour. Unlike the frenzied crowds they would soon face, the audience was remarkably well-behaved, allowing the band’s performance to shine. The Beatles themselves seemed to be having a great time, and thanks to George’s faintly mic’d guitar, John’s rhythm playing comes through more clearly than ever. These performances highlight intricate musical details across the four songs they played. Watching the footage (link here) makes you wish there were more performances without screaming!

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band starring Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees, among *numerous* other guest stars of the day like George Burns and Steve Martin. Often deemed one of the worst films of all time, we talk about the absolutely idiotic plot, the terrible acting, some of the awful covers, a few of the good ones, what the movie did to the careers of the stars, and so much more. In this episode, we talk about the title song of Paul McCartney's 1983 album Pipes of Peace. In addition to our usual discussion of lyrics and music, we talk about the powerful video that accompanied the song starring two "Pauls" (a German and English one!). This was Paul's last #1 in Britain -- does it live up to that reputation all these years later? And as always, we get into the myriad cover versions as well. Here's a list:

For our last episode of 2024 (and released on the day the Beatles were officially disbanded 50 years ago!), Dave interviews Chip Madinger, co-author of Eight Arms to Hold You and Lennonology, about all the events in the Beatles world in 1974. They talk about John's "Lost Weekend," Walls and Bridges, Paul and Wings in their new incarnation, Ringo's album Goodnight Vienna, and George Harrison's North American tour and Dark Horse. In many ways, this was the last year when all four Beatles were really active.

The Beatles: Live at the BBC was released in 1994. The album contained 50+ tracks from some of the 50+ programs the Beatles played on for the BBC during 1962-65. The album was a big hit, selling over 8 million copies, and it was a particular favorite for Dave and Chris who waited in line at a Best Buy in Champaign-Urbana, IL to buy it and get a free poster! We talk about the album, choose our top 10 songs from the album, choose some of the songs that didn't work very well (usually because of the sound quality), and much more.
