THE 3 NEAR-MISSES:
▸ The FINANCIAL Near-Miss — runway almost gone, the math getting worse each week. Then at the last possible moment something comes through. A check arrives. A deal closes. A year later it's being described in a press release as an overnight success.

▸ The RELATIONAL Near-Miss — one person who didn't have to take the call. Who didn't have to bother. Who had no obligation and was busy and could easily have just not responded. Who did anyway, for reasons of their own. And the entire trajectory of the thing continued because of that one moment of unasked-for generosity.

▸ The TIMING Near-Miss — the window happened to be open at exactly the moment the person was ready to walk through it. A year earlier would have been too early. A year later, too late. The window was narrow. They were there when it opened.

Here's what every honest private account reveals: none of these moments looked important while they were happening. The high-leverage moments don't announce themselves. They look ordinary. Which is why the only available strategy is to treat every moment like it could be the one — because the one that matters won't tell you.

And the only mechanism the people who succeeded will name, when pressed, is the one nobody wants to hear. Not certainty. Not unshakeable belief. They kept going through the uncertainty because they had decided, at some point earlier, that they were going to keep going regardless of how the doubt resolved on any given day.
