Welcome to another 80s Dhamaka! episode of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast.
This time we’re diving face-first into the drama, glamour, and full camp spectacle that is Rakesh Roshan’s KHOON BHARI MAANG (1988). Starring Rekha, Kabir Bedi, Sonu Walia, and an extremely underpaid crocodile, this revenge thriller has everything: makeover montages, fashion show trauma, and villains who just won’t die.
Join us as Amrita leads a passionate defense of Rekha’s action-heroine era, Sujoy questions the plot logic (and the horse), and Asim tries to make peace with crocodile VFX and the film’s very unique pacing. We also revisit the film’s legacy, its place in the 80s VHS canon, and why it deserves to be seen as more than a meme.
A big shoutout to our friend DJ Shai Guy for the 80s Dhamaka theme song! You can check out more of Shai's work here.

Sujoy Watches Thug Life So You Don’t Have To
In this episode, we dove into Saagar (1985)—the ultimate Dimple Kapadia comeback and a masterclass in how to shoot slow-motion beach walks. We talked:
Why Dimple is pure fire (even when Rishi and Kamal are doing the most)
The unbearable softness of 80s Kamal Haasan
Why this is basically the horniest film we’ve watched all season
And of course, Sujoy’s cinematic thirst for all things Sridevi, accidentally triggered by… Saagar?
We’re down to our final three films in the Dhamaka series—
and now and if you are are a Khandaan Patreon you get to decide the order we tackle them in.

The Khandaan gang is back with the next entry in our 80s Dhamaka series—and this time, it’s Subhash Ghai’s iconic masala bonanza Ram Lakhan (1989).
Picked by our Patreon supporters, this episode dives deep into the unforgettable world of two brothers, high-octane revenge plots, iconic songs, and the kind of full-blown filmi logic that defined a generation.
We discuss:
Why Ram Lakhan is peak 80s masala cinema
The sheer charisma of Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff
How this film influenced Bollywood for decades to come
The soundtrack’s everlasting legacy—from My Name is Lakhan to Tera Naam Liya
Why Amrita thinks it’s basically the Avengers of desi VHS
Sujoy’s nostalgia from Chitrahaar to Zee Cinema reruns
Asim’s obsession with Debu the American
Plus: Havelis, vengeful widows, song interludes every 6 minutes, and the chaotic joy of watching Bollywood do everything at once.

Khandaan continues the 80s Dhamaka series with one of Amitabh Bachchan’s most iconic—and polarizing—comedies: Namak Halaal (1982).
Is this peak masala madness or a nostalgia trip gone wrong? In this episode, Asim passionately defends his childhood favorite while Amrita and Sujoy wrestle with the film’s dated humor, dizzying plot logic, and eyebrow-raising romance arcs.
We discuss:
The comedy Amitabh debate — genius or grating?
The legacy of Kader Khan’s unforgettable one-liners
Bappi Lahiri’s absolute banger of a soundtrack (Pag Ghungroo, Raat Baaki, Jawaani Jaaneman)
Smita Patil's rain-soaked dance number and the discomfort behind the scenes
The villain lair logistics (seriously, where do you even buy a villain lair?)
Dadu-related emotional trauma and masala film magic
Disco suits, absurd aliases, and Shashi Kapoor’s unexpectedly spicy side
Next episode of the 80's Dhamaka will be Ram Lakhan (Dhina Dhin Da!)

After a short break, the full Khandaan crew is back in the house—and we’re not easing in gently.
In this episode, we dive headfirst into everything that’s been on our minds: the personal cost of conflict, censorship in media, and how Bollywood fits into a world that feels increasingly divided. From WhatsApp group tensions to government-issued podcast warnings (!), this is one of our most personal episodes yet.
🎙️ What we talk about:
The India–Pakistan conflict and how it’s impacted real friendships
Media propaganda, misinformation, and the risks of being "too political"
Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par trailer—can it survive the noise?
Suhana Khan in King—is this the launch her stardom needs or a risky bet?
Bhool Chuk Maaf, Sanam Teri Kasam, Lal Pari, and why viral Bollywood music won’t die
The surreal podcasting moment when we found out we’d been flagged by the Indian government
Our stance on love, peace, and why we'll always choose each other—even when it’s not popular
🎧 Plus:
We laugh through the weirdness of Housefull 5, dissect the awkward uncle energy of Akshay Kumar, and rant about Abhishek Bachchan’s rap career (again).
If you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong in your own fandom anymore, or you’re struggling with how to talk about art during political chaos—this one's for you.

This week Khandaan A Bollywood Podcast gives you a taster of the all the fun we have in our Patreon Community with a full episode available for the main feed.
In this bonus episode of the Khandaan Podcast, it’s just Asim and Amrita catching up and having one of those classic, freewheeling chats you’ve come to expect from us. We cover a bunch of films, including a special listener’s pick – the iconic Sangam!
Amrita saw Khalid Rehman's "Alappuzha Gymkhana" which makes us discuss about masculinity in today’s cinema – especially how it’s evolving in Malayalam films – and, of course, we reply to some of your comments and dive into comparing Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, their career choices, and their very different approaches to stardom.
Then we dive headfirst into Sangam: Raj Kapoor’s love triangle extravaganza, packed with sweeping romance, societal expectations, and some surprising gender dynamics. We chat about the film’s historical context, its cultural impact, and even some of the off-screen drama involving the actors that may have shaped what we saw on screen. And yes – we talk about that soundtrack too. 🎶
Come hang out with us!

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where this week we’re taking a new look at an old favorite as part of our 80s Dhamaaka series: 1988’s TEZAAB.
Directed by N. Chandra, this Anil Kapoor - Madhuri Dixit starrer is mostly remembered today for its iconic number, Ek Do Teen. But this is also an excellent example of 80s masala — violent, political, angsty, furious, and just plain fun. Costarring Chunky Pandey, Mandakini, Anupam Kher, and more, Tezaab is a real trip down nostalgia lane for us at the podcast.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and we’re talking EMPURAAN and SIKANDAR with friend to the pod, Pappuchaaru.
We took a break from our 80s Dhamaaka series to watch the Malayalam masala actioner, Empuraan. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, and a whole host of other actors including R10 himself, this movie has run into political foul weather just days after its release. We discuss how it all unfolded, the movie itself, and what this means for Malayalam cinema.
And then we have a lot to discuss with Sikandar. Directed by A. R. Murugadoss (Ghajini, 2008), this movie stars Salman Khan, Rashmika Mandanna, Sathyaraj, Sharman Joshi and others. Social media has already been ripping this movie apart. We discuss how low the bar has gotten and what lies ahead for Salman and the Hindi film industry.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where we’re continuing with our 80s Dhamaaka episodes. This week we have UMRAO JAAN.
One of the most iconic cinematic moments of 1981, Umrao Jaan is widely considered to be Rekha’s most celebrated performance. Directed by Muzaffar Ali and with enduring music by Khayyam, Rekha plays the role of a famous courtesan who navigates love and family in the midst of the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857. Costarring Naseeruddin Shah, Farooq Shaikh, Raj Babbar, Shaukat Azmi, Dina Pathak and others, Umrao Jaan is an essential part of 80s Hindi cinema.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and the next movie in our 80s Dhamaka series is TRIDEV (1989).
Directed and cowritten by Rajiv Rai, TRIDEV was a ginormous hit when it came out - enough for the Rais to repurpose it with Vishwatma a couple of years later. Starring Sunny Deol, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Sangeeta Bijlani, Naseeruddin Shah, Sonam, Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher among others, Tridev is still famous for its songs, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji although a case could be made that this was just an early Viju Shah soundtrack.
This movie embodies the 80s vibe in a way that few others can pull off. The fashion, the songs, the villains, the homoerotic tension, there’s a lot to get through this week.

Starring Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Nutan and Amrish Puri in lead roles, this Subhash Ghai movie written by Javed Akhtar is about as nonsensical as masala cinema gets. It is also one of the great pleasures of our movie watching lives. With music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and Javed Jaffrey making his breakdancing debut, every kid from the 80s knows their Meri Jung. All We Imagine As Light is now playing in UK theatres.
In Mumbai, thoughtful Nurse Prabha’s routine is upset when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger, flightier and rebellious roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a spot in the city to be intimate with her secret boyfriend. Their colleague Parvaty fights to stay in her home without any requisite paperwork left by her late husband. A trip to a beach town allows them each to find a space for their desires to manifest.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and this week we’re discussing 1989’s LOVE LOVE LOVE.
Starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, this was clearly a movie that held the hopes and dreams of many people — from the director to the stars to the crew. The question is whether all that effort came to anything.
We talk about the soundtrack, the crazy career paths of the people involved, the story, and our nostalgia.
We also talk about the interview The Hollywood Reporter India’s Anupama Chopra did with Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. There’s also a brief mention of the shock waves running through the Tamil film industry with Nayanthara’s open letter to Dhanush and AR Rahman’s divorce.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where this week we’re discussing CITADEL: HONEY BUNNY on Amazon Prime.
Directed by Raj and DK, Honey Bunny stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan along with Kay Kay, Simran and Saqib Saleem. We talk about what this show does better than the original and what really stood out to us.
We also discuss DO PATTI on Netflix. Produced by & starring Kriti Sanon and co-produced & written by Kanika Dhillon, this thriller is rather less than thrilling. Co-starring a self conscious Kajol, this movie is mostly a vehicle for Kriti and nothing more.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where this week we’re discussing JOSH (2000).
This was a request from our friend, Patreon, and editor extraordinaire, Yamini. And we’re trying very hard not to judge her for it.
This Mansoor Khan directorial feels a lot older than it is and stars Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai as twins with a dark Portuguese past in 1980s Goa. There’s also Chandrachur Singh, Priya Gill and Sharad Kapoor in key roles.

Directed by Lawrence D’Souza, this movie stars Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, Kader Khan, Anupam Kher, and a host of character actors you haven’t seen in decades. A remake of a play, this movie should have been effervescent good fun with two actors who were hitting the zeitgeist in spectacular fashion. Instead… listen to the episode to hear our views.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where this week we’re discussing 1995’s BAAZI.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar and starring Aamir Khan and Mamta Kulkarni, Baazi is a tribute to the Hollywood thrillers of the 1980s. We talk about the way Aamir’s character is depicted in this film, which is completely different from most cop characters in Bollywood. The songs by Anu Malik haven’t really survived the decade but are still quite catchy. Listen to the episode to find out why this is Asim’s favorite Aamir film.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where we’re travelling back to 2008 to discuss GHAJINI.
Directed by AR Murugadoss, this Aamir Khan starrer was the original juggernaut that sent Bollywood into a tailspin about the money it was minting. It established the 100 crore club and forever changed the way we talk about the movies in Hindi cinema.
Co-starring Asin and Jiah Khan, this was the remake of a very successful Tamil movie and it also set the stage for the “southification” of Hindi action movies for the next decade. Given its impact, how does it hold up? Join Asim, Amrita, and Sujoy to get the lowdown.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where we’re enjoying a rare week of happy movies.
First, Sujoy and Amrita watched MADGAON EXPRESS, a slacker comedy that delivers more than its trailer promised from debutant filmmaker Kunal Kemmu. Starring Avinash Tiwary, Pratik Gandhi, Dhivyendu, and Nora Fatehi along with a strong supporting cast, this is a very confident debut for Kemmu as a director.
Next we all fell in love once again with Kareena Kapoor (and Tabu and Kriti Sanon) in CREW. From the stable of ace feminist producer Rhea Kapoor, this Rajesh Krishnan directorial was funny, sexy, and promises to be a giant hit. Co-starring Diljit Dosanjh, Kapil Sharma, Khulbhushan Kharbanda and others, this was the perfect weekend watch.

This week we have an extra episode for our lovely listeners!
Asim talks to Prof. Sunny Singh about her new book: A Bollywood State of Mind - available in all book stores!
We had Sunny on all the way back during our Thugs of Hindostan review so it was a joy to delve a little into her book and mind.
She sent us a copy before our chat and we absolutely loved the book.
Here is a summary:
A Bollywood State of Mind is a personal, intellectual and emotional journey which crosses five continents and 50 years of modern Indian history and cinema and explores why Bollywood means so much to so many across the globe. Sunny describes how this exceptional cinema retains its hold on the national imagination, how Bollywood has enhanced India’s global standing in the 21st century, and how its characteristics endure despite the social and political changes.Ranging over history, aesthetic theory and politics, A Bollywood State of Mind explores encounters with Bollywood in the market places of Dakar and Marrakesh, in the nightclubs of New York, Barcelona and Mexico City, and in the ruins of Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, Petra and beyond. It shows how the pioneers and heroes of Bollywood cut across national, linguistic and cultural lines not only in India but in far reaches of Somalia, Peru, Malaysia and Russia.
The book is available here if you do decide to buy it, do drop her a message on her twitter/X

We begin by discussing SCAM 2003: THE TELGI STORY on Sony Liv. A well-received follow up to SCAM 1992 on the same service, this follows the intricacies of a small man who dreams big in an India where all kinds of things are possible.
That is also the main theme of BAMBAI MERI JAAN on Amazon Prime, which chronicles the rise of Dawood Ibrahim in a crime-ridden Bombay of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Featuring bravura performances by the main cast and a stylish, slick directing style, this Excel production really reels you in.

We round things off with a discussion of Raj and DK's GUNS AND GULAABS starring Dulquer Salmaan, Gulshan Devaiah, Rajkumar Rao, Adarsh Gourav, and others before launching into our main review: 1993's PARAMPARA.
Directed by Yash Chopra, this was Saif Ali Khan's debut film and it took us to many unexpected, half-remembered places. We also discuss the new song from ROCKY AUR RANI KI PREM KAHANI, a remix of Jhumka Gira Re with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt bringing the old school glamour in What Jhumka. We have some thoughts about the songs though.

We are joined by our friend Pappuchaaru, a Prabhas enthusiast, to discuss how we all got here, why we went to see the movie, and exactly what happened at the end of this Ramayana because none of us have any idea. Join us as we discuss the KISI KA BHAI, KISI KI JAAN trailer in anticipation (?) of the movie's release next week and read out a few emails from the mailbag. We addressed listener complaints about our lack of love for JOHNNY GADDAR (2007) and why so many Hindi movies are all about rape revenge fantasies.
Our main review however is the new Prime show, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, Jubilee. This multi-part historical series about the early years of the Hindi film industry, featuring fictionalized stories of recognizable star-actors was a pure delight for these cinema buffs. Starring Prasenjit Chatterjee, Aditi Rao Hydari, Aparshakti Khurana, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sidhant Gupta, Nandish Singh Sandhu, Shweta Basu Prasad, Ram Kapoor, Arun Govil and a host of other fine talent, we had a lot to discuss about this one.

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is a blast from the past - specifically, Aamir Khan’s past. Tum Mere Ho (1990), directed by Tahir Hussain a.k.a. The Aamir Dad has everything: a wronged and vengeful snake mom, a grubby dad, a lost heir, a damsel beset by zaalim samaaj, intense young love, unique tribal customs, terrible costumes, and a fuzzy timeline that ensures we’re never quite sure when all of this action is taking place.
Co-starring the always delightful Juhi Chawla and a thoroughly awkward Kalpana Iyer as a snake with tragic fashion sense, Tum Mere Ho is a classic for all the best reasons as previously outlined by Pretentious Movie Reviews.
A Short Timeline:
01.15 Asim and Sujoy watched Baahubali at the Royal Albert Hall with a live orchestra and it was magical. 11.50 Channel 4 in the UK has an interesting line up of films for you to watch and top friend Beth is back to give the lowdown on one of the films: Satyajit Ray’s Kapurush. 17.50 Asim can live again as Dabangg 3 gears for release.
23.50 Obviously Asim is a huge Vidyut Jammwal fan and a Pitu tangent about the career of Neil Nitin Mukesh 32.05 The Main Review: Tum Mere Ho

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where this week we’re throwing back to READY (2011). Starring Salman Khan and his coterie of friends along with all the character actors you’ve heard of and haven’t heard of, this movie was directed by Anees Bazmee. The fact that this movie made money is a testament to Salman’s star power. We have many, many opinions. But first, join us as we discuss the SELFIEE trailer - an Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi remake of the Malayalam film Driving Licence, that might actually be good. We also talk about the new song - Munda Sona Hoon Main- from SHEHZAADA starring Kartik Aryan and the remix of Achcha Sila Diya starring Nora Fatehi and Rajkumar Rao (?). We hope you will all check out CINEMA MARTE DAM TAK as well.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast’s very first episode of 2023. In this episode, Asim, Sujoy, and Amrita take a look at the year ahead and discuss which movies are particularly interesting to us. We were very much on the money with our predictions for 2022 - can we repeat the feat for 2023?
We also present our very first review of a current release for the new year with KUTTEY. Directed by Aasman Bharadwaj and starring everyone’s favorite scene stealers from Bollywood, we have a rather mixed response to this film.

We discuss the new song Besharam Rang from PATHAAN (2023), as well as Current Laga Re from CIRKUS (2022). Obviously we have a lot to discuss about Deepika Padukone, SRK and the power of star-driven cinema. We also talk about the unfolding mess featuring Nora Fatehi and Jacqueline Fernandez and wind up with a short review of QARIB QARIB SINGLLE (2017) starring Parvathy and Irrfan as requested by one of our patreons.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where today we have plenty to say about AN ACTION HERO, BHEDIYA, QALA, and FREDDY.
It’s raining new releases and your friendly neighbourhood podcast has a lot to say about them. Join us as we ponder the lack of enthusiasm for An Action Hero starring Ayushman Khurana and Jaideep Ahlawat; the outright failure of Bhediya starring Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon; the lukewarm response to Freddy starring Kartik Aryan; and the return of one of our favorite debutant directors, Anvita Dutt, and muse, Tripti Damri in Netflix’s Qala.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and a long-awaited review - DON (2006).
Last time, we had Top Friend Beth of BethLovesBollywood on to discuss the Amitabh Bacchan original and we discuss the long shadow cast by that film. We also talk about how Shahrukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar made the film uniquely their own to the point that Akhtar simply can’t escape it. Co-starring Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Arjun Rampal, Om Puri and more of our favorites, Don is a movie we’ve been saving for a good day.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and our take on some trending content! Asim, Sujoy and Amrita reunite to discuss SALAAM VENKY starring Kajol, which gave us all deja vu for some reason. Next, Vicky Kaushal is upto no good with Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar in GOVINDA NAAM MERA and we’re not sure what to make of it, frankly. Maybe it’ll be good? Yet another film giving us pause is AN ACTION HERO with Ayushmann Khurana, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Nora Fatehi. We got off the wrong foot when it tried to do Nora dirty. And finally, we discuss Kartik Aryan’s FREDDY, which gives us strong Dexter vibes. Come for the speculation, stay for the discussion that goes completely off the rails.

Welcome to a brand new episode of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast! In this episode, Sujoy discusses DRISHYAM 2 starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, and Akshaye Khanna among others. We watched the Malayalam original when it released during the pandemic and were curious about how it translated into Hindi. Meanwhile, Asim watched the Telugu remake of another Malayalam film - GODFATHER starring Chiranjeevi and Salman Khan. Since Amrita had seen LUCIFER starring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran when it came out, we ended up discussing the nature of remakes. Finally, Amrita watched the new season of DELHI CRIME, the Netflix show starring Shefali Shah and highly recommends it as a competent thriller.

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where today's Khan movie is DIL DHADAKNE DO (2015).
This Zoya Akhtar directorial was much reviled when it came out for its upper class aesthetic but we think it's become something of a modern classic in the years since its release. Starring Aamir Khan (as the narrator, Pluto), Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Vikrant Massey and a very talented supporting cast as expected from an Excel production, DDD is both technically brilliant and effectively entertaining.
Join us as we discuss all the ways in which this movie made us happy.
We also announce our first Khandaan London meet up! Sujoy and Asim will be watching Maula Jatt at the O2 Arena- Cineworld 1300 show on Saturday the 15th of October. If you want to join us for the screening and have a drink after, mark the date and let us know!

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where we discuss two of this week's mega releases - PONNIYIN SELVAN - 1 and VIKRAM VEDHA.
But first, our musical correspondent Asim went to the Pasoori concert (04m20s) in London and has many thoughts about the production. Next, we saw the brand new teaser for ADIPURUSH (11m40s)starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan as Ram, Sita, and Raavan respectively and… it's quite something.
Sujoy and Amrita both watched Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan (18m25s) - I starring Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, Jeyam Ravi, Prakash Raj, Jayaram and many others, and had slightly divergent thoughts while agreeing that it is a cinematic achievement. For those who're unfamiliar with the source material, we've worked out a strategy that you should first read the plot wiki before watching the film, just to keep up with all the characters.
And lastly, all three of us watched Vikram Vedha(45m30s) starring Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, and Radhika Apte. This (very loud) remake of the Tamil movie by its original directors is bound to work better for those who have not seen the version with Vijay Sethupathi and Madhavan. As a bonus, you can hear Asim interview the director duo Gayatri and Pushkar (1h16m20s) and Radhika Apte (1h28m10s)at the end of this episode.

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast brings to you the first of its Patreon specials with KHUDA GAWAH (1992).
But first, we discuss the Indian content revealed during Netflix’s Tudum event. Our picks range from KHUFIYA by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Tabu and Ali Fazal, to QALA starring house favorite Tripti Dimri who teams up with Baabil Khan (in his feature debut), Swastika Mukherjee, and director Anvita Dutt Guptan whose BULBBUL was one of our favorite pandemic films.
Our main review this week, however, is Khuda Gawah, a grand Bollywood extravaganza set in Afghanistan. Directed by Mukul Anand, this movie is a step back into time with Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and Sridevi in leading roles with a maniacal Danny Denzongpa and meek Shilpa Shirodkar bringing up the rear. Our choice of this film was fuelled by our Patreon channel — select subscription tiers are able to choose movies for us to watch. If you would like to become a Patreon for this and other benefits, check out patreon.com/khandaanpodcast
This week's Patreon members have access to the extended cut of this episode with 30 extra content as well as Vikram Vedha video interviews with director duo Gayatri and Pushkar as well as the awesome and amazing Radhika Apte!

Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast does BRAHMASTRA (2022). This is a spoiler-filled review so consider yourself warned.
Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and a bunch of super secret cameos, this movie has seen more than its share of absolutely ridiculous controversy. Produced by Dharma Productions and directed by Ayan Mukherjee, this is part one of a proposed trilogy. Join your hosts to hear what we loved, what we hated, what we found ridiculous. We don’t have any numbers to share but we can tell you what we thought of this movie as cinema.

Come for the filmi discussion, stay for Sujoy’s Kamaal Khan impression.

Welcome back to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast and our review of LAAL SINGH CHADDHA!
Directed by Advait Chandan and adapted from FORREST GUMP (1994) by Atul Kulkarni, Laal Singh Chaddha has been in the eye of the storm since we first saw a teaser pre-pandemic, for reasons good as well as terrible.
Starring Aamir Khan as the titular character and costarring Kareena Kapoor as his one true love while Mona Singh plays his mother, Laal Singh Chaddha seems like a return to normal filmmaking after a long time. All three hosts saw this movie in the theater and were delighted to have a proper discussion again.
Join us as we navigate some unexpected highs and lows.

Welcome to a special episode of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where we give you a sneak peak into the kind of content you're likely to get on our Patreon.
On this episode, it's just Asim and Amrita shooting the breeze about a couple of things that happened over the week. (You'll have to listen to find out why Sujoy is MIA).
First up, we discussed the latest episode of KOFFEE WITH KARAN where Karan was at his neighbourhood aunty best (worst?) with Janhvi Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan. This was an unexpectedly deep Bollywood-insider special episode with tons of gossip for those who know where to look.
Next, we discussed the insane hype around the song Kesariya from the upcoming BRAHMASTRA and the round of memes that it inspired.
And lastly, we talked about the soundtrack of SHAMSHERA and Ranbir Kapoor's uncanny good luck (or is it talent) when it comes to starring in movies with amazing music that will stand the test of time.

Directed by Yash Chopra, with recreated music by the late, great Madan Mohan, VEER ZAARA (2004) is the kind of old-school Bollywood filmmaking you’d be hard-pressed to find today. Starring Shahrukh Khan as an Indian who falls in love with a Pakistani, played by Preity Zinta, and ably supported by a stunning cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Manoj Bajpayee, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, Kirron Kher, Divya Dutta, and Zora Sehgal, Veer Zaara is a visual feast for more reasons than one.
Join us as we dive into this movie and explore why it appears to have all but disappeared from pop culture, and how this might be that rare film that improves in hindsight.

This week's Khandaan Podcast is something a little different. As you know, we launched our Patreon channel earlier this year with the intention of trying new formats, experimenting with content, and just creating a little space where we can do things that might not fit with the main feed.
Today, we have Amrita who is kicking it off with an audio essay about 1992: the Year that Changed Bollywood.
I don't know how many of you realized what a big anniversary year 2022 is for those of us who love Bollywood, so we decided to reach out to a few friends who grew up watching Bollywood same as us and asked them to tell us about their memories of 1992 and mashed it up with Amrita's essay.
So what you're about to listen is a group project - Khandaan style! Enjoy!
A Big thanks to all the contributors, do check them out and give them a follow:
Pitu Sultan, Manish Mathur, Aneela Babar, PappuChaaru, Uday Bhatia, Irfan, SalAndTheBadPun, Adithya Srikrishna, DJ Shai Guy, Dr.Sunny Singh

In this episode, we are joined by Shreemi Verma, the world-famous Face of Panache! Although MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI wasn’t her first pick, it is a movie that she has watched multiple times and we had lots to discuss.
Starring Salman Khan during the worst phase of his career, Akshay Kumar as he was on his way back to success, and a very young Priyanka Chopra, this David Dhawan directorial takes you right back to a very different era of Bollywood. We talk about the casting, the storylines, and how it makes us feel when we watch this movie in 2022.

Episode 35 of the Khandaan podcast features our return from a much-needed break, so you know we’ve got something big for you - yes, it’s 1995’s monster hit, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge!
Aditya Chopra’s debut film changed Hindi cinema in ways that still influence filmmaking across South Asia today and turned Shahrukh Khan into a superstar. Co-starring Kajol, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Satish Shah, Parmeet Sethi, Mandira Bedi and Himani Shivpuri in addition to a baby Karan Johar, DDLJ was a sensation when it released.
We are joined once again by Top Friend Beth of BethLovesBollywood fame to explore how well this movie has stood up to the ravages of time and its unique position in Bollywood history.
We also do a small catch up on things that happened while we were away.

Episode 34 of the Khandaan podcast is here for one last hurrah before we go on a short break for the month of April. Our special feature is 2001’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
Directed by Karan Johar, this is an old fashioned mega starrer of the kind rarely seen these days - with Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor (Khan), Johnny Lever, Farida Jalal, Sushma Seth, Achala Sachdev, and a special appearance by Rani Mukherjee.
We threw open our Curious Cat once again for this episode because we knew you would all have tons to say and ask about this movie and we were correct! It’s clearly not as much of a favorite as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai but it has definitely established itself as a fan favorite over the years, especially on the internet where it has a cult following - if something this big and successful could be called a cult film. We are joined for this episode by our friend Ruchi who definitely had a lot to say.
This episode is being released with some quick thoughts on Sonchirya, Lukka Chuppi and Made In Heaven(although you can hear us discuss Made in Heaven with Ruchi here) but for the rest it's a giant episode for a giant film.
Please point and laugh at all those weeping at the thought of a three-hour Avengers film.

Episode 33 of the Khandaan podcast brings you one of our favorite movies, 2007’s Om Shanti Om. Directed by Farah Khan, this Shahrukh Khan-starrer was also Deepika Padukone’s debut film. Co-starring (Chowkidar) Kirron Kher as Maa, Shreyas Talpade as Friend, and all of Bollywood as backup, OSO is an homage to Hindi film. It should surprise nobody that co-hosts Asim, Amrita, and Sujoy love this film.

Episode 32 of the Khandaan podcast brings to you the results of your vote - or that of dedicated Aamir bots, you be the judge - 1997’s Ishq, starring Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla, Kajol and Ajay Devgan with Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Dalip Tahil, Johnny Lever, Tiku Talsania, and Mohan Joshi in key roles.
Directed by Indra Kumar, Ishq was a massive success when it came out, despite a chaotic production schedule that effectively destroyed the Aamir-Juhi pairing forever. To discuss this film, we’re joined once more by Haroon Rashid of the BBC, who has always maintained that Ishq is his all-time favorite Bollywood film. Although we did our best to ruin it for him, he ran the gauntlet and emerged more or less unscathed.

Episode 31 of the Khandaan podcast is a bit of a departure for us - it’s the first episode that doesn’t feature a Khan! Originally recorded as part of our upcoming Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham episode (so much fun!) with friend Ruchi, we decided it would just push an already mega long episode over some invisible edge of our listeners’ patience. So here’s some bonus material for you!
Made in Heaven is the new Amazon series from Excel Entertainment. Written by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, this critically acclaimed miniseries follows two wedding event planners in glitzy, high society Delhi as they battle their personal demons while simultaneously serving as front row audience to some of the most deep-rooted problems facing Indian society. It’s rich people behaving badly - in a recognizably Indian way.
We also interviewed the creators and writers of Made In Heaven, Reema Kagti and Alankrita Shrivastav over on the Upodcast- Bollywood Edition feed. You can listen to the chat here.
Episode 30 of the Khandaan podcast stars Aamir Khan in a movie directed by Kiran Rao - 2011’s Dhobi Ghat with Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra, and Kriti Malhotra. Joining us to discuss this surprise winner (the other movies up for votes this week included Dabangg and My Name is Khan) is the BBC’s Ashanti Omkar, who has a personal connection to the film. Dhobi Ghat proved to be an interesting topic for conversation, more so because it raised some important points about context and intent in art and cinema; and how perceptions can change over time.
We also discuss a few new projects: Sujoy was the only one to watch Isn’t It Romantic, the new Rebel Wilson romcom co-starring Priyanka Chopra, and he has some non-spoilery thoughts. On the topic of PC, we also discuss Sucker, the brand new single by the Jonas Bros. co-starring their significant others (including Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner). We also have a few things to say about KGF, the big Kannada movie creating waves across India, and Super Deluxe, an upcoming Tamizh movie.
Also, keep an eye out for a special episode on Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. We’re bringing back our Curious Cat for it and welcome all questions and comments.

Episode 29 of the Khandaan podcast has arrived with 1991’s Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, starring Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt. Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, this remake of the beloved Hollywood classic It Happened One Night was a star vehicle for two enfant terribles of the age — Bhatt, who was setting Bollywood on fire with her unconventional antics, and Khan, who was tipped to be the next big thing.
We also discuss two hot new releases: Shelley Chopra Dhar’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, starring father-daughter duo Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor along with Rajkumar Rao and Juhi Chawla. It is probably the most high profile LGBTQ film to have come out of the Hindi film industry in a while (not forgetting 2016’s Kapoor & Sons, which was a very different film). You can hear more about it here on the Upodcast interview with the director.
The second new release we discuss is, of course, the movie that has fast become the talk of the town: Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Raaz, and Kalki Koechlin. Based on the real life journey of street rappers Divine and Naezy, this movie is attracting almost universal love.

Episode 27 of the Khandaan podcast brings to you the one, the only Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)! As soon as it showed up on our list, we knew this was going to be everyone’s pick because this movie is integral to our understanding of Bollywood today. Welcome to Episode 24 of the Khandaan podcast. Today we’re joined by Jay Mamtora, founder of BollyBrit, one of the last few outposts of independent Bolly-focused media on the internet.
Join us as we discuss 2014’s Farah Khan-directed glitzy spectacular (?) Happy New Year, starring Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, and Vivaan Shah with Jackie Shroff and Anupam Kher as supporting cast. A heist movie that also tries to be a revenge saga, a romance, a buddy movie, a dance competition movie, and a masala entertainer with nationalist underpinnings, it’s a bit of a mess.
We also discuss current Bollywood happenings – from the spate of weddings (Anushka! Sonam! Deepika! Priyanka!) and their gossip quotient, to all the new films coming out. Watch out for our extended debates on Simmba, Kedarnath, 2.0, and more.
And finally, just a reminder that we’re back to old and tested ways and you should vote for our next movie here.
Welcome to Episode 23 of the Khandaan podcast in which we welcome Shivani Tripathi (@Shivani510) writer for The Aerogram, Brown Girl Magazine, The NRI and the return of friend of the show Anisha Jhaveri (@Jhavanis).
In this episode, we go back to one of the earliest releases of Aamir Khan, Raakh- directed by Aditya Bhattacharya. The movie is tough to find even though there was a Redux version released in theaters, the home release was stalled.
The movie also stars Supriya Pathak and Pankaj Kapur but they don't share any screen time together. The movie was a box office failure but has been gaining some critical acclaim after the redux version released in festivals.
We also discuss how the latest season of Koffee With Karan has been working for us.
The emergence of box office draws Ayushmann Khuranna (Vicky Kaushal, Rajkummar Rao) and if there is a changing of the guard for Bollywood heroes.
Asim also forces everyone to watch the new song promo for Zero, Mera Naam Tu as he wants to talk about his favorites as usual.

Welcome to Episode 22 of the Khandaan podcast in which we welcome Dr. Sunny Singh, writer, academic, and co-founder of the UK’s Jhalak Prize for writers of color. Her latest book, Amitabh Bachchan, is now available from the BFI.
In this episode, we deviate slightly from the usual in that our main movie is one that just made its debut – Vijay Krishna Acharya’s unsanctioned take on Pirates of the Caribbean: YRF’s Thugs of Hindostan (2018) starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub. Despite being universally panned within hours of its first screening by critics and audiences alike, in a true testament to our unique brand, we have successfully assembled a panel of viewers who managed to unironically enjoy this film (except Amrita, who in addition to being the resident wet blanket, also elected to go on holiday instead of making the trip to the theater).
Join us as we discuss whether this film is a worthy successor to the films of Manmohan Desai (Sunny), or Vijay Krishna Acharya belongs in the same bracket as Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder (Asim, batty as usual), something-something-yawn (Sujoy), and Aamir jokes that are too mean (even for Amrita).
We also discuss a few trailers – the already controversial Kedarnaath with Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan; 2.0 with Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar; and, of course, Zero starring all who are dear to Asim. Keep a ear open for Sujoy as he tries to save his skin after Asim paints a large target on all of us.

For Episode 20, our guest is a fellow podcaster: Maxdavinci of The Lewd Cabal, your go-to podcast for an eclectic selection of topics including deep dives into South Indian cinema, food, sports, and a whole lot more to come. For his debut appearance on The Khandaan, Max chose an evergreen classic: 1992’s Salman Khan-starrer, Suryvanshi.
This legendary piece of cinema was allegedly a figment of Salman’s imagination – a film unmatched, as Max points out, in not only Hindi but in all Indian cinema for decades in its scope and concept. The costumes, the special effects, the homage to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the boundless racism, the indifferent songs that at least two of the four people on the podcast have seared into their lizard brain, the camera’s unerring eye for thrusting bosoms… this is a movie that offers much to the discerning viewer. Co-starring an extremely hammy Saeed Jaffrey, a disconcertingly excellent Amrita Singh, a sanskaari Sheeba, Sushma Seth, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan, and Puneet Issar, Suryavanshi is a lot.
As usual, we also discuss some of the new releases and trailers – Thugs of Hindustan and Bazaar, as well as Sui Dhaaga, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam and Pataakha. We discuss the sheer and welcome reliability of filmmakers such as Vishal Bhardwaj and Mani Ratnam before somehow ending with plans to watch 1990’s Tum Mere Ho.If there are movies or guests you would like to see featured, do remember to drop us a line at upodcasting@gmail.com

On Episode 19 of the Khandaan podcast, we continue our limited edition run of favorites with everybody’s preferred incendiary film critic, Raja Sen. A reviewer with Hindustan Times and the author of a children’s book based on The Godfather (!), The Best Baker in the World, Raja has chosen Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se (1998) to discuss.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with a brand new restored print available on Netflix, this movie threw up some interesting reactions on the panel. Raja maintains that this is Shahrukh Khan’s best and most natural performance to date, but Sujoy and Amrita had issues with the film on a personal and political level. Asim was too dazzled by Preity Zinta to care.
Starring Manisha Koirala as a beautiful young terrorist from India’s Northeast, SRK as a radio journalist, and Preity in her breakout debut as the fresh young thing next door, Dil Se has garnered quite a reputation over the years even though it underperformed upon release. We discuss this phase of SRK’s career, our issues with the performances, and of course no episode of Khandaan is complete without a little gossip.
We also discuss some of the new releases over the past fortnight – from the Spiderman video game to Stree, which is garnering stellar reviews (including one from Raja). We also touch upon Amazon’s Jack Ryan, a series that Asim and Amrita took serious issue with.
If there are movies or guests you would like to see featured, do remember to drop us a line at upodcasting@gmail.com
We’re changing things up a trifle in Episode 18 of the Khandaan Podcast – for the next few episodes, we’ve asked our guests to choose their favorite Khan movie to discuss. First up, is the delightful Sammy (a.k.a. @lipstickpatrol on Twitter) with Dil To Pagal Hai (1997).
Directed by Yash Chopra, this candy floss romance might barely have a plot but it has some stellar 90s tunes by Uttam Singh, an incredibly talented music director who seemingly disappeared in the years since this movie was released. Featuring some of the romantic tropes that have come to define the SRK brand of romance, this movie also won Karisma Kapoor a National Award for her role as Nisha, the best friend whose love remains unrequited. Surprisingly the only movie to star Madhuri as “A Yash Chopra Heroine”TM DTPH makes for some lively conversation between the hosts and the guest.
As usual we also discuss a few new releases and trailers such as the upcoming Sui Dhaaga starring Asim’s forever crush Anushka Sharma – once again facing a troll army online even as she excels onscreen. Asim also gives his quick thought’s on Netflix’ new 3 part horror series GHOUL starring Radhika Apte.

Welcome to Episode 17 of the Khandaan Podcast in which our audience thinks it’s doing us a favor and makes us watch Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai (1998).
Starring Salman Khan in one of his last candyfloss (?) romance roles, this film evokes strong childhood memories of going to the cinema for two of our hosts. Co-starring Twinkle Khanna in one more role she couldn’t play, JPKHH makes a number of strange choices – there’s Anupam Kher is a role tailor made for Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever in a role meant for Laxmikant Berde, Namrata Shirodkar with enough charisma for a female lead, and young master Aditya Narayan who gets on everybody’s nerves.
Asim and Amrita were Not Fans of this movie but Sujoy outed himself as a sleeper Salman fan when he refused to let his co-hosts ruin his fond memories of this film. But before we get to the good stuff, we make our way through all the new trailers that came out this past week – the execrable Batti Gul Meter Chalu (rechristened by Sujoy in a way that will get us banned), the surprising Manmarziyan, the puzzling Laila Majnu, and a whole host of other Bolly things you’ll want to hear about.
Subscribers are reminded that Khandaan is currently accepting nominations for our special run. Please send your suggestions for movies of the Khans that you feel we must watch to upodcasting@gmail.com. But first, coming up are a few episodes with guests who wish to discuss their favorite Khan movie.
In Episode 16 of the Khandaan Podcast, we continue with our new limited edition format: this time, a buy-one-get-one-MUFT! MUFT! MUFT! film called Karan Arjun (1995).
Starring Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan, this film has penetrated deep into desi pop culture – spawning satirical skits, comedic shorts, and memes galore with its extremely quotable quotes, outsize characters, and a type of masala filmmaking that is both antiquated and sorely missed today (by us, if no one else). This Rakesh Roshan film co-stars Kajol, Mamta Kulkarni, Amrish Puri, Rakhee Gulzar, Ashok Saraf, Johnny Lever, Ranjit, and other well-known and well-beloved actors.
This week our Top Bro, Beth of BethLovesBollywood is back – revealing herself to be a first-time viewer in our shocking revelation of the week.
We also discuss the brand-new release Dhadak and the many controversies it spawned, sparking some lively discussion. Here is an article and a video that caught our attention. We then look at some underwhelming new trailers for films we probably won’t watch.

In Episode 15 of the Khandaan Podcast, we switch up our format for a special series: over the next few episodes, we will discuss movies nominated by our audience as their all-time favorites. We begin with 1992’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. Starring Aamir Khan, this was the second film made by cousins Aamir and Mansoor Khan, co-starring Ayesha Jhulka, Dipak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, and the always reliable Khulbhushan Kharbanda among others.
We are joined this week by The Guardian’s Mike McCahill, who was watching this movie for the very first time whereas Asim, Sujoy and Amrita grew up with this film and its soundtrack as a constant in their younger lives. This movie is also rich in Bollywood trivia, some of which might be found here in the reunion staged by Anupama Chopra and Rajeev Masand (yes, this is the same video that almost drove Amrita mad.)
We also discuss the brand-new release Sanju, the whitewash special directed by Raju Hirani starring an eerily excellent Ranbir Kapoor, who rebounds in style from a couple of years of less-than-successful films. Co-starring Sonam Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Karishma Tanna, Anushka Sharma, and Dia Mirza, this movie should have been a knockout but sadly isn’t.
Lastly, we look at Sacred Games, the first Indian original commissioned by Netflix. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead, ably supported by a large cast of pitch perfect actors (including Kubra Sait, Radhika Apte, Neeraj Kabi, Jitendra Joshi and others), it’s based on the Vikram Chandra novel and adapted to screen by Varun Grover, Smita Singh (not Bansal as Amrita says in the podcast, sorry), and Vasant Nath. Co-directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, this series sparked quite a bit of conversation.

Note: The Khandaan podcast is an interactive experience! Please click here to vote for the next movie you think we should feature. For episode 16, we have Shah Rukh Khan’s early era.
Episode 14 of the Khandaan Podcast brings you 1996’s Khamoshi the Musical which stars Salman Khan, Manisha Koirala, Nana Patekar, Seema Biswas, and a very lovely Helen.
However, Asim, Sujoy and Amrita begin the podcast with a raucous discussion of Salman’s latest blockbuster, (the widely and justifiably reviled) Race 3. A bro-laden movie so terrible, it drives Salman-lover Asim into enraged incoherence while Sujoy and Amrita try not to die laughing. Please excuse the f-bombs in this family-friendly podcast.
Tired out from all the emotion, we examine Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut feature: a sensitive depiction of a tragedy-magnet family. Featuring several themes Bhansali would go on to explore with better budgets, Khamoshi nevertheless manages to retain some of its charm at this long distance of 24 years. The songs have withstood the test of time and the performances are better than any of us expected. Amrita, however, maintains her irrational dislike of Manisha.

Welcome to Episode 13 (gulp!) of the Khandaan Podcast where we discuss 2011’s Don 2, starring Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani, Lara Dutta, and Kunal Kapoor.
In this podcast, we talk about the consistently high production values of Excel Entertainment that allow it to make movies that don’t age as badly as other Bollywood product. However, how far can technical excellence take you when the writing is merely ho-hum? This episode left Asim, Sujoy and Amrita with more questions than answers – will Farhan ever make another movie? Were PC and SRK destroying Bharatiya Sanskriti during this film? How hot is Lara Dutta? Etc.
We also discuss the blockbuster new release "Veere di Wedding" and the amazing response it has received from male reviewers who are massively upset with its brand of female power. We also look at the many controversies that emerged from this film, including Swara Bhaskar’s infamous statement about Pakistan. A few words are also spared for "Bhavesh Joshi", a movie that dared but couldn’t bear (any fruit at the box office).
Asim looks forward to your outraged responses to this podcast! He would also like to remind you that Khandaan is currently accepting nominations for our special run, which begins with episode 15. Send us your listener choices at upodcasting@gmail.com

Welcome to Episode 12 of the Khandaan Podcast! This week we’re discussing 2006’s Jaan-e-Mann, starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Preity Zinta.
While JEM has gained a bit of a cult following in the years since its release, it was a disastrous flop when it came out. An uneasy marriage between troubling Bollywood stereotypes and a whimsical ode to classic Hollywood musicals, JEM is by turns fantastic and repulsive. Asim, Sujoy and Amrita have plenty to discuss when it comes to the themes of the film, its reception, the stars, the makers and its place in Bollywood history.
Meanwhile, we discuss a few housekeeping items of interest to our loyal listeners and discuss a few current events such as the reactions to the Race 3 trailer, Salman Khan’s increasingly visible disinterest in song-and-dance routines, and a trio of remarkable interviews: one in which Madhuri Dixit can barely hide her disdain for Rajeev Masand; and two in which Anupama Chopra skillfully drew out Madhuri and Bobby Deol, who dominated the chatter cycle this week with a highly emotional response. Don’t miss the amazing gifs by Sujoy on our Upodcast Twitter feed!
We also recommend this fun Madhuri interview by AIB! Don’t forget to send your screenshots and requests to upodcasting@gmail.com.

Welcome to Episode 11 of the Khandaan Podcast and 1999’s Hum Saath Saath Hain, Sooraj Barjatya’s follow-up to his game-changing Bollywood classic, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...
Starring Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, and Mohnish Behl alongside the regular Rajshri cast of Reema Lagoo as Maa, Alok Nath as Babuji, Shakti Kapoor as lower income (Muslim) dost, and other assorted stereotypes, this film was the biggest hit of the year when it came out. Together, the reunited trio of Asim, Sujoy and Amrita investigate whether it has held up or indeed, if there is anything to hold up at all.
A remake of the Ramayana, this movie isn’t short on homilies on the ideal family – and it is an orgy of patriarchy upheld by traditional gender roles interrupted by mediocre songs laboriously staged for minutes on end. Others have brilliantly lampooned the cultural aspects of this film already, so we kept our discussion to the film itself. HSSH provides many a LOL, none of them intentional. It is not a film we would recommend to anyone, not even budding Salman Khan fans. Our audience might disagree – and we read out a few responses from our listeners on why they chose this movie.
The three of us also discuss exciting trailers for upcoming movies (Bhavesh Joshi, Veere di Wedding, and the Madhuri Dixit-starrer Bucket List) and defend Sujoy’s honor on the internet.

Welcome to Episode 10 of the Khandaan Podcast, where we come at last to the one movie we’ve constantly been quoting – 1994’s Andaz Apna Apna. Starring the rare movie combination of Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, this Khantastic film was a big flop when it came out but has attained cult status since then as seen in our poll where it beat out the most commercially successful film of 1994, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…?
Costarring Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, and Paresh Rawal in key roles, this Rajkumar Santoshi film offers a veritable who’s who of character actors who elevate the sketches that make this movie a classic. If you can make it past Asim, Sujoy and Amrita crying with laughter as they struggle to describe what they liked about this film, you might find old memories awakened.
However, is this a movie we can recommend to newbies and non-native speakers? Join us as we discuss weighty issues such as effectively translating comedy, self-referential comedy in Bollywood, Aamir Khan’s undercooked comedic chops, and whether we had the same tastes as children as we do now.

Welcome to Episode 9 of the Khandaan Podcast, where we turn our eagle eyes toward Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), starring Shah Rukh Khan at the height of his stardom. Commonly believed to be a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s weepie Anand (1971), starring Rajesh Khanna at the height of his stardom, KHNH is a souped-up melodrama best remembered nostalgically than rewatched in the present according to podcast consensus.
This week we are joined by guest host and writer/journalist Anisha Jhaveri as Sujoy continues to chase success as influencer to the sundar, susheel, and thodi special. Asim, Amrita and Anisha initially approached KHNH with eagerness, especially since it beat out Tere Naam, an excruciating Salman Khan remake of an excruciating South Indian film, but their joy soon turned to ashes as they were forced to confront that their nostalgia was misplaced and this movie was basically a sporadically funny, racist, homophobic mess with extremely unfortunate costume design.
We recommend you read Molly Ringwald’s excellent essay on dealing with problematic faves in retrospect after listening to this episode.
Episode 9 also includes a short discussion of the short-lived Salman Khan sentencing saga and Asim’s inability to properly understand the visual appeal of SRK walking around aimlessly while dressed in white linen.

Episode 8 of the Khandaan Podcast features Chandramukhi (1993), starring Sridevi as a celestial being and Salman Khan as her child lover. An uncomfortable mish-mash of Tom Hanks’ Big by way of Telugu blockbuster Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari, starring Chiranjeevi and Sridevi, this little viewed film was a disaster at the box office – surprising none of us.
This week we are joined by guest host Tanvi from the MovieWalaPod in the absence of Sujoy, who is off launching a new career as Instagram model. Asim, Amrita and Tanvi all agreed that this was hands down the worst movie they have had to watch for a podcast, featuring: graphic child abuse, a pedophiliac alien, ALL the bad guys, and incredibly shoddy production values. We also discuss other movies that released the same year, notably Darr, and Asim requested an anthropology lesson regarding the finer techniques of dancing for Shiva, thereby exposing Tanvi and Amrita as Bad Indians. Thanks, Asim.
For a more appreciative review of Chandramukhi’s nonexistent charms, we recommend Beth Watkins’ much more patient article. In the meantime, Asim would like you to know this is not Chand ka Tukda, the other Sridevi-Salman starrer with much better music.

Episode 7 of the Khandaan Podcast finds co-hosts Asim, Sujoy and Amrita reunited to discuss Paheli (2005), starring Shahrukh Khan in a double role, Rani Mukherjee and a whole host of cameos from Juhi Chawla to Amitabh Bachchan.
This Red Chillies Entertainment film was directed by Amol Palekar, the everyman of yesteryears’ parallel Hindi cinema, and was even India’s official entry to the Oscars for its year. Based on a short story about a bride and the ghost who loves her, Paheli made a lot of right noises about women’s empowerment and the right to choose. More than a decade on, we examine how those messages hold up.
Sujoy declares Paheli the best film we have watched on this podcast thus far, while many of our listeners call it their favorite film, but Asim and Amrita play spoilsport.
We also take a moment to discuss the passing of cinema legend Sridevi and the recent Bollywood release, the rather controversial hit Sonu ke Titu ki Sweety.

The thriller was directed by Reema Kagti whose long awaited follow up is the Akshay Kumar starrer Gold of which we also discuss the trailer.

Can one really overstate the Khan effect on Bollywood these past 25 years? Asim, Sujoy, and Amrita, co-hosts of the Khandaan podcast, don’t think so. The movies of Aamir, Salman, and Shahrukh are significant threads forming the rich cinematic tapestry that adorns the background of the lives of generations of South Asians – we sang […]
