In this episode, we visit artist Andrew Schoultz at his studio in Los Angeles. Andrew comes from a grabiti background and started painting grabiti in the 1980s. He attended art school
in San Francisco, but grabiti was always what attracted him the most. Over time, he became increasingly engaged with the social and political climate in San Francisco. While he always loved the act of writing a name, he eventually wanted what he painted in the streets to carry more meaning than simply putting up his own tag. He began questioning the narcissistic aspect of grabiti and instead wanted to create work that addressed social issues and served a larger purpose.
In this conversation, we explore his love for both grabiti and skateboarding, and the strong parallels between the two.
We also talk about the importance of finding balance in life - not letting art consume everything. Life is bigger than just making your own work, and having balance ultimately makes you a better artist.We also talk about his passion for painting murals and being out in the streets. For Andrew, one of the most meaningful parts of creating a mural is connecting with the people around it. It’s about becoming part of the community that will ultimately live with the piece long after it’s finished.
