34. Summer Shorts - Temperance

In this episode we discuss the last of the cardinal virtues: temperance! We are so thankful for all of our listeners for walking through each of these amazing virtues with us.  Next week we will wrap up our summer series with an amazing interview with Brother Pius Marie cfr!

The catechism of the Catholic Church so beautifully tells us that "temperance: moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods...it keeps desires within the limits of what is honorable." (1809)

Though the pleasures of the world are not always bad, they can often prevent us from doing what is truly good. This is where temperance is needed because it prevents us from acting on these dangerous urges. It allows us to govern our desires, instead allowing our desires to govern us.

Gelato, for example, is not bad and who doesn't desire it?  However, if my desire for it is so intense that I miss out on my child's recital because I had to wait in line for 20 minutes to get my delicious gelato then I did not use temperance to reign in these desires. My urges kept me from doing what I ought to have done.
