Magasin III

On April 28, 2022, Mona Hatoum gave a lecture at Magasin III in conjunction with her solo exhibitions Mona Hatoum – Revisit at Magasin III, and So Much I Want to Say at Accelerator.

The painting Natten (The Night) was created by Tal R in 2019 specifically for Magasin III Jaffa, Tel Aviv. The painting was shown at Magasin III in Stockholm in 2021, together with six woodcuts. On Saturday, December 4, 2021, museum director Tessa Praun had a talk with Tal R about his artistry and the topic of falling in relation to the subject matter of Natten (The Night).

Audioguide for the exhibition The Nature of Particles at Magasin III Museum & Foundation for Contemporary Art in Stockholm. The exhibition features works by Jake & Dinos Chapman alongside works by the 19th century artist Francisco Goya. In the audioguide curator Tessa Praun tells about the background of the exhibition and brothers Jake and Dinos Chapman’s artistic practice. Jake Chapman talks about how he and his brother Dinos began using Goya’s famous series of etchings Los Desastres de la Guerra as a starting point in his oeuvre, as well as about the artworks we see in the exhibition The Nature of Particles at Magasin III. Karin Sidén, Associate Professor and Director General of the museum Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde and former curator at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm has for many years immersed herself in Francisco Goya’s oeuvre, including Nationalmuseum’s exhibition on Goya in 1994 and in the exhibition From El Greco to Dali in 2003. How does one build a collection today, that is both in tune with the times and relevant for the future? What are good working models for making the collection an active part of the organization? In March of 2014 Grafikens Hus in Mariefred burned down to the ground. This extreme situation ignited many questions, among them how does one build a new collection today? Museum director David Neuman has invited two of Sweden’s experts on Ernst Josephson, Ulf Abel and Peter Cornell, to discuss one of the artist’s drawings, which has recently become part of our collection. It is one in a series of over 100 drawings called “andeprotokoll,” which Josephson created during a time of mental illness. They are a sort of record of spiritual visitations, all of which follow a fixed format. Moderator: David Neuman, Museum Director, Magasin III and Affiliated Professor, Stockholm University. Participants: Ulf Abel holds a doctorate in art history. He has worked for many years at Nationalmuseum, where he was responsible for the icon collection. Among Abel’s areas of research are Byzantine and Russian art, as well as early 20th century Swedish art. British musician James Leyland Kirby talks about his album An Empty Bliss Beyond This World, released in 2011 under the name of The Caretaker. Made solely from sampled gramophone records of pre-war ballroom music, it reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in what happens when our minds and memories begin to deteriorate. Recent research has shown that for Alzheimer’s sufferers, music can act as a trigger to reawaken lost memories, and this has been a starting point for Kirby’s exploration of the mind and how it operates. The album was played in its entirety as part of Magasin 3’s exhibition On the Tip of My Tongue, on one occassion only. On a Sunday afternoon in October 2013, it could be heard inside the old ice-skating pavillion at Kastellholmen in central Stockholm.

How does art affect us? And what function does art serve in a public space? And what can the humanities do for economics? As part of a collaborative project to bring new perspectives into the academic environment, the Stockholm School of Economics and Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall launched a program that presents film-based artworks in the school’s Atrium, in May 2013. Since then there has been a growing debate in the media about the relationship between the humanities and the business sector. A Venture into the Unconscious Canadian artist Tamara Henderson talks with curators Richard Julin and Tessa Praun about the films and sculptures included in the exhibition On the Tip of My Tongue. Henderson allows herself to be led by her unconscious. Her working method transforms dreams, fragments and impulses into real action, as she deliberately sidesteps the control of a self-censoring mind. Her work opens up to another level of experiencing that we instinctively recognize – but that is hard to articulate. In this conversation, the listener is brought closer to the particular state of mind from which these works originate. Tamara Henderson is a recent graduate from the Royal Art Academy in Stockholm. Last year her work was shown at Documenta 13, Kassel and at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Germany. Earlier this year she had a solo show at Kunstverein Nürnberg. She was nominated for this year’s Canadian Sobey Art Award.

LA based filmmaker, artist and writer Miranda July talks with Canadian writer Sheila Heti about the making of We Think Alone. Speaking from the perspectives both of creator (July) and participant (Heti), the conversation centres around the challenges involved in publicizing personal information, the role of the audience, and on the question of how email can become art. We Think Alone is an artwork by Miranda July commissioned by Magasin 3 for the exhibition On the Tip of My Tongue. It consists of a compendium of 20 emails originating from the sent-items folders of participants Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lena Dunham, Kirsten Dunst, Sheila Heti, Etgar Keret, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Catherine Opie, Lee Smolin and Danh Vo. Sent out once a week between July 1st and November 11th, 2013, it exists only in the inboxes of those who signed up to receive it.

Extracts from a conversation between the French artist Pierre Huyghe (born 1962) and Curators Richard Julin and Tessa Praun. The experience of seeing Pierre Huyghe’s work Untilled at Documenta 13 in 2012, has been the key source of inspiration in the making of the exhibition On the Tip of My Tongue. In this conversation, amongst many things, Pierre Huyghe and the curators talk about cutting out the spectator and reflect on the implications that this idea may have on exhibition making. Pierre Huyghe’s work, which includes film, installation and public interventions, often take the form of constructed systems that are as unscripted as living organisms. Through his work, Huyghe is able to conjure up quite otherworldly realms in which his artworks appear freed from the constraints of accepted reality.

Swedish musician and artist Stina Nordenstam talks with curators Richard Julin and Tessa Praun. Having kept a low profile throughout her career, she is an enigmatic figure, often playing with changes of appearance. In this trialogue (conversation in three) Stina Nordenstam talks about her perception of time, her relationship to music, art and the world in general, as well as how she has been affected by the media attention. Stina Nordenstam has released six full length albums including And She Closed Her Eyes (1994), People Are Strange (1998), and The World Is Saved (2004). She participates in the exhibition On the Tip of My Tongue with the sound installation Tänk dig en människa on view both at the music festival Way Out West in Gothenburg and at Magasin 3 in Stockholm.
