🎙️ Special Episode – “When Two Protective Walls Meet”
Welcome to this special episode of the MBT podcast.
This time, we are given a different kind of insight into therapy. It is not only the client and his therapist in the room — his partner joins the session as well.
And that reveals something that can be difficult to discover when you only talk about a relationship.
What actually happens between two people?
Both long for connection.
Both want to feel seen and heard.
And yet, precisely when that connection is needed most, distance can emerge.
Today, we listen to a conversation where two perspectives come together, gradually revealing how protection on one side can trigger protection on the other.
And perhaps more importantly:
How do you find your way back to each other when both of you are trying to protect yourselves from being hurt again?
⸻
🧠What is central in this episode
Changing within an existing relationship
When one person changes, the relationship changes too.
Responses that were predictable for years begin to shift.
Old expectations no longer always fit.
And both partners have to rediscover who the other person is becoming.
⸻
Two walls with the same purpose
An important moment emerges when it becomes clear that both partners have their own protective wall.
One withdraws when he feels unseen or misunderstood.
The other protects herself when she fears being hurt again.
Two different responses.
Yet underneath them lies something surprisingly similar.
⸻
Being heard without having to be right
Does someone have to feel the same way in order to understand you?
This session explores what acknowledgment actually means.
Not saying the other person is right.
Not adopting the same perspective.
But making room for the emotion behind the words.
⸻
When the past enters the conversation
A comment in the present can land much harder than intended.
Not only because of what is being said.
But because of everything that came before it.
Old pain, disappointment, and previous experiences can become part of today’s conversation without either person realizing it.
⸻
Daring to lean on someone
Then the conversation reaches a deeper layer.
What does it actually mean to be able to lean on someone?
And what happens when support was never something you could simply trust or predict?
A few words are enough to touch something old — and suddenly the session reveals how quickly distance can appear.
⸻
🌟 The common thread
The common thread in this episode is not about who is right.
It is about what happens between two people who both long for connection while simultaneously trying to protect themselves.
Mentalizing here means slowing down.
Not immediately reacting to what you think the other person means.
But exploring:
What did I actually hear?
What did that make me feel?
And is that really what the other person meant?
⸻
đź’¬ Closing
This episode shows how complicated connection can become when two people are changing together.
Sometimes one person puts up a wall.
The other feels the distance and builds a wall of their own.
And before you know it, two people who actually long for each other are standing on opposite sides.
Perhaps reconnecting does not begin by tearing down the other person’s wall.
But by carefully revealing what is hidden behind your own.
“This is what your words touched in me… but is that what you meant?”
