March 24th: Mary Ann Cotton Hanged (1873)
Insurance policies are a double edged sword. On one hand, a payout after a loved one's death can help the surviving family in ways that they never knew they needed. Things like the funeral cost, or the settling of debts. On the other hand, the promise of a large settlement can bring out the most evil parts of a person. On March 24th 1873 a woman was hanged for the crime she committed in the name of insurance money and comfortable living.
