October 12th: Matthew Shepard’s Murder (1998)
Some stories become political statements that last well beyond the murder itself and the ensuing trial. On October 12th 1998 a young boy was murdered and, though the motive remains a topic of debate for some, his death became the push some needed to pass a much needed law to ensure safety for certain minority groups like the LGBTQIA+ community.
