The Schoolhouse Blizzard: Homestead National Historical Park

On January 12th, 1888 during an unusually mild winter day, a sudden and deadly storm descended onto the American Midwest. Hurricane force winds, blinding snow and plummeting temperatures caught hundreds completely off guard. The historic storm was nicknamed the Children’s Blizzard or the Schoolhouse Blizzard as many of the victims were children attempting to find their way home through the storm from their one-room schoolhouses. While hundreds perished, stories of brave teachers and students alike emerged in the aftermath.
