In Ben Shahn’s New Deal Murals: Jewish Identity in the American Scene (Wayne State University Press, 2015), Diana L. Linden, an art historian of American art based in Claremont, California, explores the colorful–and political–murals of the leftist artist Ben Shahn during the New Deal. Born in Lithuania and raised in New York, Shahn distinguished himself in the 1930s as an artist with a keen eye for expressing the social and political events of his day and the history of Jews in America.
