Judges - General Introduction

Judges brings us before a people who have received an inheritance but struggle to live from the gift. God hears their groaning and raises deliverers; after relief, they repeatedly return to the worship that enslaves them. The book holds courage and ruin together. Its faithful acts deserve thanksgiving, its victims deserve lament, and its repeated failures expose a heart that needs more than a change of circumstances. Read in the light of Christ, it teaches us to receive mercy without making peace with the desires from which we have been rescued.
