Goddess Kali is the first Mahavidya, a profound mystery, the power of Now or Eternity. Kali leads us beyond the fear of death, assuring us of eternal life. This goddess is always shown sticking our her tongue, laughing at our fear of death, while showing skulls and blood. Kali Ma is the mother of all, she is the life force or prana. Manifestation starts with Kali which is time, because for something to change, time has to be. Thus Kali Maa is also named the firstborn goddess.
