Postmodernism

In art, architecture, music, film, literature, sociology, communications, fashion and philosophy there is a contrast between “the modern” and “the post-modern.” But just what are the main hallmarks of the postmodern? How does the “postmodern” differ from the “modern?” Is the postmodern an improvement over the modern?
