A Florida judge has allowed the parents of Gabby Petito to pursue a lawsuit against Brian Laundrie’s parents over a statement that allegedly gave the Gabby’s family false hope that their daughter was still alive. Brian confessed to his diary that he killed Gabby on Aug. 27, 2021, while the two were traveling in a van through the western U.S.
According to Gabby’s parents, Brian sent text messages to Gabby’s mother while posing as his fiancée after killing her. According to the lawsuit, Brian returned alone to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida, on Sept. 1 and is believed to have vacationed with his parents at Fort DeSoto Park between Sept. 6 and Sept. 7. Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt, Gabby’s parents, further allege that the Laundries ignored their frantic requests for information about their daughter; the Laundrie parents allegedly went so far as to block the text messages from — and the social media accounts of — Gabby’s parents. On this episode of Prime Time Crime, Attorney Andrew Yaffa joins Katrina Daniel for a deep dive into the Petito’s lawsuit.

The Marshall Project is dedicated to making Americans aware of the fault lines of the American Justice System. We’ve been told for so long that our justice system is broken; the group’s goal, to quote their mission statement, “is to make the justice system more fair, more effective, and humane.” Marshall Project Data Reporter Waihua Li is going to tell us all we need to know, including why crime stats are worse than we ever thought, and worse than has been reported.

Twenty-five years ago on July 15, 2017, Gianni Versace, Italian fashion designer, socialite and founder of the fashion empire that bears his name, was gunned-down as he entered his Ocean Drive, Miami Beach mansion after walking from his favorite breakfast place, The News Café, just a couple of blocks from his fabulous mansion. Versace was a regular on Miami Beach back in the late 90’s.... His designs were worn by the most-famous super models, his fashion shows were attended by the elite fashion followers of the day…the late Princess Diana, Madonna, Cindy Crawford. Gianni Versace brought the friendliness of his native Italy to Miami Beach, until that morning in July when American spree killer, Andrew Cunanan, decided to murder Versace. One of the country's largest manhunts ensued. Cunanan was hiding inside a Miami Beach boathouse and took his own life eight days following the murder. The motive has never been determined. Miami Herald Reporter, Howard Cohen, covered the case and he’s here to talk about things we couldn’t talk about back then. True crime lovers, this one’s for you!

It is horrible that we have to say “ the latest mass shooting.” 19 children and two of their brave teachers, were stuck in a fourth-grade classroom in Uvalde, Texas this past Tuesday, as they were massacred by an 18-year-old murderer who was gunned down by police. Before driving to the school in full body armor and carrying an AR-15, Salvador Ramos shot his grandmother in the face, apparently over a cell phone bill. If his grandmother survives, investigators will be able to ask her about other possible motives. Until we have more answers, Katrina Daniel’s guest psychiatrist Dr. Glen Ross Caddy, will give us a profle and why he thinks may be causing all of these horrible murders. Dr. Ross Caddy’s experience includes having interviewed more than 50 convicted murderers.

The Doodler was a man who slaughtered his victims years ago and is still on the loose in San Francisco, where he stabbed to death as many as 6, and quite possibly more, gay men. James and Jennifer Crumbley, are the parents of alleged shooter Ethan Crumbley. Ethan shot and killed 4 of his fellow students and injured several more at his high school in Michigan with a semi-automatic weapon his parents bought him as an early Christmas present. Ethan carried it to school in his backpack. Both he and his parents have pled not guilty. They also claim they didn’t flee arrest even though they took out $4,000 from an ATM, fled their home and hid in an art warehouse miles from their home in Michigan; missing their arraignment. Their lawyers, of course, say it is all a misunderstanding. Katrina and her guest (borderline co-host), Prosecutor Richard Gregorie, take a look at all the evidence.

The frightening tragedy at Houston’s Astroworld, 50,000 people in attendance during the Travis Scott concert. Eight young people lost their lives, including a 9-year-old and a 14-year-old. Concert goers suffocated and trampled to death as the crowd went wild. There is just so much blame to go around. The fire marshals did not shut the concert down, the police and other security did not shut the concert down. The promoters and organizers, Live Nation, did not shut the concert down. Travis Scott? He continued to perform – although he did call out the ambulance that drove through the crowd once he saw it. Scott mentioned that someone had passed out and asked for help, but he never stopped performing. Lawsuits are coming for Travis and company. Katrina Daniel talks with personal injury attorney, Andy Yaffa, about what is expected to happen next.

On August 25, 2020, after the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Kyle Rittenhouse, shot and killed two men and wounded another during confrontations at two locations. He was armed with a Smith & Wesson M&P15 rifle. Rittenhouse, a then 17-year-old from Antioch, Illinois, said he was there to provide medical aid as he was carrying a medkit. At the first location, Rittenhouse was pursued by a group, including a Kenosha resident Joseph Rosenbaum. A gunshot was fired into the air by a third party, and Rosenbaum lunged at Rittenhouse and attempted to take his rifle. Rittenhouse then fired four times at Rosenbaum, who died shortly afterwards. At the second location, Rittenhouse tripped while fleeing and was kicked by a man. Rittenhouse fired twice at the man, but missed. Protesters approached Rittenhouse while he was still on the ground. Then Silver Lake resident Anthony Huber struck Rittenhouse with a skateboard and struggled for control of his rifle. Rittenhouse then fired at Huber once, killing him. West Allis resident Gaige Grosskreutz then approached Rittenhouse while holding a handgun, and Rittenhouse shot him once, severing his right bicep. Now he is 18, and being tried as an adult, facing homicide and several other serious charges. To help us break down what’s happening in this trial —from a defense point of view— criminal defense attorney Joe Rosenbaum (who ironically has the same name as one of the two men Rittenhouse shot and killed) joins Katrina Daniel for a deep dive into this fast and deadly crime spree.
