In January, this newsletter reported on a repressive cybersecurity law enacted by the military junta in Burma that empowers officials with sweeping controls over digital spaces. Last week, that law came into full effect. It criminalizes the use of VPNs, mandates that platforms store and hand over user data to officials upon request, and allows authorities to shut down Internet access at will.
