Losing the first 116-pages of the Book of Mormon translation thrust Joseph Smith into a dilemma.
He tried to get out of it by creating a separate history to cover the same period of time as the lost 116-pages.
But in doing so, Joseph Smith managed to leave his fingerprints that he is the actual author; that he is not translating a history but creating a fictional account.
