Ragnar's Hidden War: The Siege of Paris and the Monk

We often think of Ragnar Lothbrok as a raider, but his siege of Paris in 845 reveals a different side to Viking leadership. This episode explores how Reginherus, likely a Frankish king or chieftain, negotiated with Charles the Bald not just through force, but through diplomacy. We look at the role of Saint Gervais, the monk who intervened, and the concept of Danegeld. Lucas and Luna discuss how these early payments set a precedent for Viking strategy across Europe. We examine the Annals of St. Bertin and the Vita Hludovici to understand the political landscape of the Carolingian Empire. The conversation touches on the cultural exchange between Norse warriors and Frankish clergy, and how silver changed the nature of conflict. Join us as we uncover the human stories behind the legend, focusing on the diplomat rather than the warrior.
