In 2002, while serving as a Major in the Army Reserve and working civilian security between activations, he accepted an overnight post at an aging foundry built on old rail ground in east-central Florida. During a heavy rainstorm, something crossed his headlights. What followed was not chaotic. It wasn’t aggressive. It didn’t even acknowledge him.

He pursued it across wet sand between the buildings, issuing commands the way he had been trained to do. The ground recorded what moved through it.
