EP. - 1741 - THE PET CEMETERY MURDERS: A GHOST STORY

In 1985, Dorothy Thompson, owner of the Azalea Pet Cemetery in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, was found dead in the Mississippi River, and her murder went cold for decades. Then in 2009, a man told detectives that Dorothy had appeared at the foot of his bed wrapped in chains, and that he knew who killed her. Director Philip Cairney talks about HBO’s haunting new three-part docuseries The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story, from Lightbox producers Simon Chinn and Jonathan Chinn. He discusses how a cold case cop reopened an investigation on the word of a ghost, Dorothy’s complicated life and painful relationship with her mother Grace, who founded the cemetery, and how Hurricane Katrina wiped out crucial evidence and left lasting scars on the community. Phil also explains why every local has a story about that land, the eerie thing that happened to his camera on the property, and whether the “haunting” was a ghost or guilt.
