My guest this week is Josh Kantor (Organist for The Boston Red Sox; keyboardists w/ The Dream Syndicate, The Split Squad & The Baseball Project), who picked the Stevie Wonder LP, film score and theatrical film, The Secret Life Of Plants.
We discuss Josh playing with Mavis Staples and Peter Buck, his mentorship from the legendary Clem Burke and playing in a band with him, the influence of Nancy Faust (the White Sox organist) on him, transforming the endless musical requests he gets while playing organ at the ball park (ranging from Black Sabbath to Maceo Parker), our experiences as children with Stevie Wonder’s Journey Through "The Secret Life Of Plants" double lp, the strange tale of how this film and album got made, albums made specifically for plants, the head-scratching un-released sequel to the book The Secret Life Of Plants, how the film's director (Walon Green) also wrote the screenplays for Sorcerer & The Wild Bunch and created the freaky tunnel scene in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, how the film's producer would describe the film to Stevie Wonder as he created the soundtrack, how this was the first time sampling was used on a commercial recording, using animals sounds throughout the record, the floral-scented first pressing of the LP, screaming vegetables and boiling shrimp experiments shown in the film, how the real science in the film gets dwarfed by pseudo science, Josh's high school recording of "Come Back As A Flower", the incredible trilogy of Stevie Wonder songs at the end of the film, how and why the LP and tour flopped on its intial release, the shock of Stevie Wonder showing up within the actual film and more!
