Writer, Director, Minion: Pierre Coffin

In this episode, Christina sits down with Pierre Coffin — the filmmaker who has directed or co-directed every film in the Despicable Me and Minions franchises, and voices every single Minion.

Pierre grew up moving across Asia — the son of a French diplomat and the celebrated Indonesian novelist Nh. Dini. His childhood spanned Cambodia, Japan, and eventually a suburb of Paris. His father forbade television, so Pierre spent his time drawing, reading, and listening to music. He studied animation at Gobelins in Paris, then joined Illumination Entertainment where he and Chris Renaud built a story about a supervillain and his little yellow henchmen. Fifteen years later, that story has become one of the most commercially successful animated franchises in history — grossing over $5 billion worldwide.

Across the conversation, he shares how he built Minionese out of the languages he grew up around, what it's actually like to voice thousands of characters while directing them at the same time, why every Despicable Me film was supposed to be his last, and what changed on Minions and Monsters that pulled him back in.
