Why do kids graduate from school knowing calculus… but not how money works?
In this episode, I talk with Lucy Taylor, a student entrepreneur at University of Austin, who is building an innovative platform called Aurum to teach financial literacy through gamification and AI.
Lucy began her entrepreneurial journey at just five years old selling eggs, and today she's developing what she calls a "flight simulator for personal finance." Instead of boring lectures or outdated personal finance classes, Aurum lets students practice managing money inside a simulated economy, helping them build real-world financial skills before the stakes are high.
In this conversation we discuss:
• Why most personal finance education fails students
• How entrepreneurship teaches kids responsibility with money
• The connection between math, optimization, and financial decision-making
• Why learning about money after getting credit cards or student loans is dangerous
• How AI and gamified learning could transform education
Lucy also shares simple ways parents can begin teaching financial literacy at home through real-life experiences, entrepreneurship, and everyday conversations about money.
If you're a homeschool parent, educator, or parent raising entrepreneurial kids, this episode will challenge the way you think about teaching money.
