Why did Ananias and Sapphira die? Matthew 6:1-4 (KJV): "Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them."

Jesus says to give "in secret," not "as the hypocrites do... that they may have glory of men" (Matthew 6:2). Matt traces how money was raised in the Bible: for the poor, not for buildings. Paul's collection for the saints at Jerusalem carries "God loveth a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7). The disciples sent relief to Judaea before a famine (Acts 11:29), and the widow cast in "all the living that she had" (Luke 21:4).
Then the rich young ruler (Mark 10:17-27): "Jesus beholding him loved him," and he "went away grieved: for he had great possessions." Matt: "At least this dude was truthful enough... he's not a hypocrite. He walked away." Next comes the contrast: Barnabas sells his land, but Ananias and Sapphira keep back part of the price and die. Peter tells them, "Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God" (Acts 5:4). Why did they lie? "To be seen of men," the same motive as Matthew 6:1-4.
Also: Satan entering Judas twice (Luke 22:3; John 13:27), all of Matthew 23 ("Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!"), and three people who were not hypocrites: Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10), Apollos (Acts 18:24-28) and Nathanael, "in whom is no guile" (John 1:47).
