Practitioners of high-control Christianity present the “core” teachings of the tradition as being about God’s unconditional love and acceptance of human beings. This is the “public-facing” presentation of high-control Christianity. But when we take a deeper look within high-control Christianity, we encounter a bait-and-switch. On April 16th of 2021, Clay Clark, a far-right conspiracy theorist and self-proclaimed "alpha toxic male," from Tulsa, Oklahoma held his first "ReAwaken America" tour—an event that began in Oklahoma as a protest against COVID-19 restrictions and quickly grew into a nationwide platform for nationalism, so-called "patriotic streetfighters," and prophetic politics. In the buckle of the proverbial Bible belt, Clark created a cavalcade of Trumpian support, attracting actor Jim Caviezel, former U.S. national security advisor, Michael Flynn, Eric Trump, son of President Donald J. Trump, and many more Republican luminaries. When you think of international media hubs, you might think of Los Angeles, California, or New York City. When you think of places that are political powerhouses, Washington, DC, is an obvious choice. This week, Dr. Leah Payne speaks with award-winning journalist and professor Caleb Gayle and Dr. Daniel Isgrigg about a media center and political force that may not be top of mind: Tulsa, Oklahoma. Long known for its oil wealth, Black Wall Street, and the 1921 massacre, Tulsa is also an unappreciated epicenter of the global Charismatic and Pentecostal movement. It’s a city where televangelists built empires, where charismatic theology shaped politics, and where spiritual power and political influence are deeply intertwined. Here’s how the argument goes: If God created human beings, and therefore human sexuality, this means that the purpose of sex is procreation, because this is God’s intended purpose. But does the argument work? Dan argues that even if we presuppose human beings and their sexuality as a direct creation of God, the idea that the purpose of sex is procreation is STILL not compelling. Dr. Liliana Mason is faculty at Johns Hopkins University and author of Uncivil Agreement: How Politics Became Our Identity.

In a new article, Activating Animus: The Uniquely Social Roots of Trump Support, she and her co-authors show that “Trump’s support is thus uniquely tied to animus toward minority groups.”

She provides key takeaways fro this study:

“First, the people who really like Trump in 2018 are the same ones who really disliked Blacks, Muslims, LGBT+, and Hispanics in 2011. It’s NOT THE SAME for the GOP in general, or even for Ryan or McConnell. Trump is drawing on this particular group of people to a unique degree.The new MAGA/anti-MAGA conflict is not an entirely partisan one. It’s about white Christian supremacy versus a fully multi-racial democracy. And it’s not happening for anyone on the Democratic side. Hating Christians and White people doesn’t predict favorability toward any Democratic figures or the Democratic Party. So it isn’t “anti-White racism” (whatever that means) motivating the left. It’s not “both sides.” This means that there is a faction in American politics that has moved from party to party, can be recruited from either party, and responds especially well to hatred of marginalized groups. They’re not just Republicans or Democrats, they’re a third faction that targets parties.

In “"For Such a Time as This," Latinx Charismatics & Pentecostals & the 2024 Election,” Dr. Leah Payne speaks with three scholars who study the intersection of religion, politics, and Latinx communities in the United States.

Dr. Erica Bryand Ramirez  is a sociologist of religion and currently Director of Applied Research at Auburn Seminary in Manhattan. In addition to writing about Pentecostals and Politics for The Washington Post  and  Religion News Service, Erica’s series on Texas Megachurches on The Anxious Bench is a fascinating analysis of charismatic communities and how they envision national politics.

Dr. Lloyd Barba is an assistant professor of religion at Amherst college whose writings include Sowing the Sacred: Mexican Pentecostal Farm Workers in California and an edited volume on the politics of immigration and the Latino faith community entitled Latin American and US Latino Religions in North America which also features Dr. Erica Ramirez.Lloyd has also written about Pentecostals and politics for The Washington Post, Religion News Service, and other news outlets. Today I speak with two historians, Sergio González and Lloyd Barba, who just finished a fantastic series called Sanctuary: On the Border Between Church and State. I had the opportunity to act as the executive producer for the series and will be out soon for Axis Mundi Media, in conjunction with the Institute for Religion, Media, and Civic Engagement. 

The story they tell is of a radical civil rights movement that confronted restrictive governmental policies on immigration from the 1980s all the way to the current moment. It's one that will change how you think about immigration, about faith, and the ways that some Americans, at least, have committed to welcoming the stranger and practicing a radical hospitality.
