In 2006, despite the unstoppable ascendancy of liberal-capitalist hegemony in the post-Soviet context, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), completed a successful revolution in one of the poorest countries in the world, overthrowing a nearly 250 year old autocratic monarchy aligned with the United States. We trace a brief chronology of the revolutionary conflict, then discuss how the Maoists were so successful in recruiting the masses to their side, particularly women, peasants, and indigenous groups.
