Why Narcissists Ruin Every Good Moment
Om avsnittet
In this episode of Surviving Narcissistic Abuse with Jill Wise, we’re talking about something almost every survivor of narcissistic abuse will recognize: the narcissist’s uncanny ability to ruin what should have been a perfectly good moment.
Birthdays. Holidays. Vacations. Anniversaries. Weddings. Graduations. Accomplishments. Sometimes it isn’t even a special occasion—you’re simply happy, relaxed, laughing, or enjoying yourself. And almost as if they can sense your peace, something suddenly changes. There’s an argument. A criticism. A mood. An accusation. A crisis. And before you know it, the joy is gone and all of your attention is focused on them again.
Why does this happen so consistently?
In this episode, I explore the psychology behind why narcissists so often sabotage happiness, including their pathological envy, need for attention, desire for control, and difficulty tolerating situations where they are not the emotional center of your world. We’ll also talk about why your happiness and independence can feel threatening to a narcissist—and why destroying a good moment can become another way of controlling the emotional temperature of a relationship.
But there is another consequence of this behavior that survivors don't always recognize. When happiness is repeatedly followed by conflict, punishment, criticism, or chaos, your nervous system begins learning that joy isn't safe. Eventually you may stop looking forward to birthdays, dread holidays, become anxious on vacations, minimize your accomplishments, hide good news, or find yourself waiting for something bad to happen whenever life is going well.
And those patterns can remain long after the narcissist is gone.
Healing isn't only about understanding what happened to you. It's also about reclaiming everything narcissistic abuse taught you to fear—including happiness, peace, celebration, connection, and the ability to be fully present in your own life.
If you've ever wondered why the narcissist seemed determined to ruin every good moment—or why you still have difficulty relaxing when everything is going well—this episode is for you.
