• A Child of Trauma: At age six, Vernesa survived the accident that claimed her parents' lives. She was taken in by a loving family, but the ensuing years were marked by abuse from extended family members, forcing her to leave her new home around age 10.
• Mother Mildred's Embrace: Her life changed when Mildred, an extraordinary woman and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, rescued her and brought her into an orphanage she ran. Mildred provided the love and healing that Vanessa desperately needed, becoming her third "mother." Vanessa describes the beautiful yet challenging environment of the orphanage, where older children cared for the younger ones, passing on a culture of love and service.
• An Unimaginable Loss & Call to Service: Just one year after Vernesa’s own baptism into the Church, Mother Mildred tragically passed away at age 40. In the wake of this devastating loss, the other orphans rallied, urging Vanessa to take Mildred's place. Vernesa chose to stay, becoming the mother figure for 272 orphans, 72 of whom she currently houses in a small, five-bedroom home after a flood destroyed the main orphanage building.
