S01e05 RFK: "In the Image of God and Democracy"

50 min • 1 augusti 2022

In this episode of the podcast, co-hosts Ryan and Kevin continue talking about Bobby Kennedy's tenure as United States Attorney General in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. When African-American students enroll in highly segregated Southern Universities, RFK goes toe to toe with segregationist governors and an unruly population who aren't opposed to using violence to achieve their racist goals.

We then shift our focus to Birmingham, Alabama, where Martin Luther King Jr. and other Civil Rights leaders peacefully protest for their civil rights amidst a torrent of racial violence spearheaded by men like "Bull" Connor. With the end goal of getting Congress and the President to pass a Civil Rights Bill, the March takes civil rights activists to the streets of Washington D.C., where the March for Jobs and Freedom sees men like MLK and John Lewis give the most important speeches of their careers standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

In the background, we learn how Bobby Kennedy and the Justice Department ensured the March remained peaceful by pulling the strings in a variety of ways.
