Samuel Tilden and his Campaign roll into Election Day with confidence that he would win the presidency. It seemed like such a foregone conclusion that he would win that most newspapers jumped the gun in reporting a Tilden victory.
So how did things go wrong? How did Rutherford B. Hayes wind up winning the 1876 Presidential Election? Why did the newly founded state of Colorado matter so much?
The answer to that question is an ugly, crooked, bloody, and divisive election process that would ultimately set the course for an end to Reconstruction and lay the groundwork for the Jim Crow South.
