Should We Observe the Sabbath Laws (Exodus 31.12-18)

Welcome to this episode of our podcast, where we will be exploring the topic of observing the Sabbath laws based on Exodus 31:12-18. This passage raises important questions about whether believers in Jesus Christ should continue to observe the Sabbath maybe even worshiping on Saturdays instead of Sundays.

In Exodus 31, Moses is on Mount Sinai receiving instructions from the Lord. The passage begins by emphasizing the significance of the Sabbath as a sign between God and the people of Israel. It symbolizes their unique relationship with Him and their separation from other nations. Observing the Sabbath was considered crucial to Israel's spirituality, and failure to do so could result in severe consequences, including death.

The Sabbath, along with other covenants in the Bible, serves as a sign of God's covenant relationship with His people. The Noahic covenant had the sign of the rainbow, the Abrahamic covenant had circumcision, and the Mosaic covenant had the Sabbath. The New Covenant, which believers in Jesus Christ are under, is marked by the sign of the Lord's Supper or communion.

So, should believers in Jesus Christ observe the Sabbath? The New Testament provides insight into this question. In Romans 14:5-6, Paul encourages believers to honour the day they consider holy to the Lord, recognizing that some may observe certain days while others do not. Furthermore, the apostle Paul emphasizes in Colossians 2:16-17 that the Sabbath was a shadow of things to come, and the substance is found in Christ.

Ultimately, the Sabbath carries deep symbolic and historical significance, but it is important to understand its fulfilment in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus brought a new covenant, and believers are called to rest in Him and find their Sabbath rest in His finished work.

As we explore this topic further, we will consider the implications  in light of the New Covenant and the teachings of Jesus and the early church. Understanding the true essence of the Sabbath will help us navigate how we honour and worship God in our lives today.

Join us on this journey as we dive deeper into the biblical principles surrounding the observance of the Sabbath and how it applies to our faith and daily lives.
