Hundreds of survivors huddled in lifeboats, scattered across the freezing dark, while the Carpathia steamed toward them in answer to Titanic’s wireless distress calls.The sea was littered with debris and voices, but the full scale of loss was still hidden by darkness and cold. The Carpathia arrived to a scene without order. Lifeboats bobbed alone or in clusters.
