Now we know there are lots of TV shows about buying and selling antiques and collectables but we thought followers of this podcast would like to hear about what goes on behind the scenes of an actual working auction house as we go about our daily business, the characters we meet, the things we find, and the things we wished we had never found.
Famed for our slightly different auctioneering style, constant chatting on the rostrum, awful jokes. Stick with us as we bunk off to record anecdotes, interview others in the industry and basically gabble on. If you enjoy the podcast, please leave us a rating.

ABOUT THE PODCAST
The Gavel and The Gabble is a podcast hosted by Harry and Simon who, together, are lucky enough to run two provincial Auction Houses in Windsor, Berkshire and Seaton, Devon.

Harry and Simon give an update on the market with their recent sales at Windsor and Lyme Bay Auctions. They talk about the positive growth in the market for furniture, especially dark brown furniture. Harry and Simon also share stories of valuable items found in costume jewellery boxes and the importance of not underestimating the value of inherited jewellery. The conversation then shifts to the topic of liability in the auction industry, specifically regarding the refunding of a buyer for a gold-plated item. There's also mention of a new auction house encroaching on their territory and the phenomenon of bear parachuting.

Another best of this week as Harry and Simon have been very busy with auctions. We’ve got clips from PostIt4Me’s Jeremy Parnham, talking all about the challenges of postage in the industry. We’ve got Matthew Priddy from Historics giving us all the info we’ll ever need on classic car auctions. There’s also questions from you the listener and Harry and Simon tell you what happens when they spot a fake item.

Record store owner Jaimie Fennell joins Harry and Simon as a guest once again to give us an update on how all things vinyl, cassette, and music in general are going in the current market. We also find out about Record Store Day and if it’s really beneficial to record stores and sellers, or if it’s just to line the pockets of the record companies. We also hear all about who’s buying what and why at Rooster Records and there's a bit of a coincidence when Jaimie starts talking about 78s on episode 78.

Lots of big topics up for discussion on today's podcast, including more updates on the ivory ban and if auctioning items that have been cleared for sale could still send you to prison. Simon rants so much it gets its own theme music, Harry gets insulted on the job, the team finds some expired Spam, and we tell you if you can fit an elephant in a three bedroom semi.
Please note, in this episode there is discussion about the ivory ban. Obviously everyone involved in this podcast is against harming animals in any form. We are simply discussing the effectiveness, implementation, and education around the latest government guidelines for antiques containing ivory.

ABOUT THE PODCAST
The Gavel and The Gabble is a podcast hosted by Harry and Simon who, together, are lucky enough to run two provincial Auction Houses in Windsor, Berkshire and Seaton, Devon.

Charity auction etiquette. Not everybody gets it and that’s why Harry and Simon are discussing the best way to bid, have fun, and raise money for the charities themselves. There’s also chat about the exciting things coming up on the pod before Christmas, why imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and Simon tells a joke…. You be the judge.

Auctioneers Harry and Simon return to chat about the weird and wonderful things they’ve sold this week…. Or in Simon’s case sold but also not sold. Harry tells us what other people in the industry think is the most important trait an auctioneer can have and Simon has visited the tidiest hoarder in Britain.

Sharon O’Connor returns to the show bringing with her a fellow upholsterer, Delyth Fetherston-Dilke. The pair are here to tell Harry and Simon all about the recently published government consultation on draft fire regulations for upholstered furniture, which will involve increased use of fire retardant chemicals.
Sharon and Delyth are concerned that the harm caused by these chemicals outweighs the fire safety benefit, and believe the regulations have not given proper consideration to the re-upholstery business.

Richard Worrall, President of NAVA Propertymark, that’s the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers, joins Harry and Simon on the podcast this week. He’s here to tell you about the work NAVA does and how he’s trying to lead the way in making the industry more fairly reflect our wonderfully diverse country. There’s also some brilliant insights on the property auction industry and why estate agents should be informing their clients about the benefits of selling at auction.
Harry and Simon also want to take this opportunity to apologise to Richard’s two Labradors. It was very unreasonable of them to keep your owner busy during what should have been dinner time. The dogs were perfectly within their rights to interrupt the podcast in protest.

What traits do you need to have to become a successful auctioneer or someone who works in the antiques trade? That’s the listener question Harry and Simon are answering in this week's episode. Aside from that serious chat there’s funny stories and anecdotes involving a mysterious lion cage, a jewel thief dog, and Colonel Sanders of KFC fame.

This week Simon has been shunted off to a new office and Harry tells us all about the Sotheby's Freddie Mercury sale. Items from the Queen singer’s home went up for auction, rock and roll memorabilia such as Freddie’s prized 1973 Yamaha G2 baby grand piano and crown and cloak ensemble from the Magic tour sold for eye watering amounts. There’s also chat about classic Silver Age Marvel Comics, the Pig Husbandry Challenge Cup, why more people are downsizing, a life size fibreglass cow, and yet more problems with ivory legislation.

Big news this week as Celebrity Antiques Road Trip will be recorded at Windsor Auctions at 10:30am on Friday 28th of July 2023. If you’re local then why not come along and see which celebrity and experts will be there. There was also a free valuation day at Simon’s local town hall where he got to appraise a 14 karat gold brooch with jade leaves woven into it, a pair of teardrop cloudy jade earrings, and Simon also found out the secret of a long and happy marriage. Harry has gripes with high street gold scrappers and also with himself for being so good at his job.

Adam Hills from Retrouvius joins Harry and Simon this week to talk all about his business where he brings salvaged, reclaimed and vintage materials back into circulation. Find out how much is salvaged from building renovations, why reusing is always a better option than recycling, and why Adam thinks the government is hesitant to go all in on salvaging materials and reusing them. As well as that there’s the usual jokes, panic from one of your hosts, and chat about passions away from the auction house.

Harry’s back from a busy week of charity auctions where he sold a tandem skydive, a Ferrari VIP experience, and threatened a former MP. Simon’s also had a busy week with his new employee Pablo the dog, who seems to be a fierce negotiator. Lyme Bay have also just wrapped up a vinyl sale where most of the buyers were from the US, find out why. Then the pair have all the usual interesting finds like an unknown Rolex with an emerald green dial.

This week Harry and Simon discuss the pitfalls of being risk averse when it comes to pricing at auctions and why starting low could actually help you achieve a higher percentage. There’s also chat about how Harry found selling his first ivory item under the new rules, Simon reserving a slot on the ATG’s wall of shame, and the popularity of walnut in a time where dark woods aren’t selling.

Harry and Simon are back! But who’s this mysterious Pablo who has invaded Simon’s home? Could it be an infamous Colombian drug lord? The real answer is even more unlikely. In this episode there’s also chat on the items coming up for auction such as some Brazilian Pop Art that was rescued from a skip and a horde of silver found in an open garage. Listen in to find out why nobody wants your dining table and why you could be seeing the Mona Lisa up for auction at Lyme Bay soon.

This week it’s a seriously useful topic that could make you money. Harry and Simon are discussing how to make money from, and with your local auction house. This could be as a side hustle or a serious career. Listen in to find out how you can add value to items. How an auction house's distribution network helps you. What’s so special about items being new to the market, and finding your niche. There’s also some silly bits including Harry saving children while stuffing his face with cake.

Famed for our slightly different auctioneering style, constant chatting on the rostrum, awful jokes. Stick with us as we bunk off to record anecdotes, interview others in the industry and basically gabble on. If you enjoy the podcast, please leave us a rating.

Harry and Simon are back to the usual format of both gavel and gabble! The gavel part covers a rather angry anonymous email they received from someone who might not understand how an auction actually works. So Harry and Simon explain the process behind how their auctions work and why it’s the right thing for them to get the best outcome for their clients as possible.
Then there’s plenty of gabble including stories of Simon being trapped by a dog, how to hide Stonehenge from the public, is owning a dog the same as having a child? Simon offends yet another group as he can’t understand Northerners. Harry is off to the Royal Windsor Flower Show and the pair discuss the amazing work done by the EmbraceMe Foundation in Ukraine

This week Harry is off sunning himself on a beach enjoying a cocktail with one of those little umbrellas in it. That means Simon has pleaded with producer David to put together the best and worst of part 2, so that he doesn't have to learn what any of the buttons in the studio do. These are some of the best clips from the podcast so far including clips from guests Sharon O’Connor and Michael Hawkins, as well as funny bits and a couple of serious interesting ones too.

We’re back! Slightly later than scheduled but it’s the bank holiday so can you really blame us? This week Producer David has got some listener questions about the auction trade for Harry and Simon to answer. Find out what happens when a buyer can’t pay for an item, why you can’t bid on an item in your own auction no matter how much you want it, where you’re going wrong when bidding, and so much more. Hear how Harry met a gentleman who got his start in business by diving in bins and we read out some of your surprisingly lovely reviews.

Owner of Ryedale Auctioneers, Angus Ashworth, also known as The Yorkshire Auctioneer, is on the pod to chat about taking to the rostrum at 16, his time as a Mayor, telly work on Antiques Road Trip, and why the bomb squad turned up at his auction house.

Today Simon is embarrassing Harry in two ways, firstly by announcing that Windsor Auctions broke their house record at the last sale. Secondly by making Producer David edit in lots of clips from that auction where Harry got the estimates a little bit wrong. There were some fantastic items that could land Harry on the ATG ‘Wall of Shame’ such as a Victorian pinchbeck pearl necklace from Watherston & Son and a silver and gold, natural saltwater pearl and diamond brooch from 1880.
Also Simon is currently looking for a new home for some very, very heavy antique printing presses. There’s chat on bidders getting a bit competitive over silver. An item that went way over estimate and the buyer wouldn’t say why. Plus Simon got a free lesson on a custom made harp from a sweet old lady.

Today on The Gavel & The Gabble Harry and Simon tell stories from their week including Harry getting dressed up all fancy for a charity auction and Simon falling in love with another item. This time it’s a huge Victorian bookcase so we look forward to him not wanting to sell that at the next auction. Find out why Harry and Simon are getting cancelled this week and Simon’s story of a homeowner having the worst day possible.
Oh! And we have a guest! Richard Payne-Withers is the owner of not just one fabulously successful antique business, but multiple ones, Bridport Antiques, The Alleyways Bridport Antiques Centre, and The Bridport Vintage Market. Today as Harry and Simon are very busy with upcoming auctions and house clearances, we thought we’d bring you a ‘best of’ or maybe ‘worst of’ is more accurate. So producer Dave has been through the first 10 episodes of the podcast to find some funny bits that newer listeners might have missed. Back next week with another normal episode.

Today on the pod Harry and Simon actually talk about antiques and collectables instead of trying to inflict pain on each other. Harry tells us about a very nice large octagonal cut peach sapphire ring that is coming up for auction while Simon tells us why he's living in fear of the WI. The items they chat about include hand cranked Victorian printing presses and some exciting lots that could be from the set of the upcoming Great Expectations TV series. There’s also a very grown up discussion about who has the most diamonds and where the removals teams like going for afternoon tea.

Since Simon has just had his birthday we thought it would be great to have a little change to the formula and get someone young and successful on the podcast. This week Harry and Simon are joined by Matt Dixon of TallBoy Interiors to chat about how he has thrived on Instagram, his love of interior design, and how he came to own the best showroom in Yorkshire. Plus there’s loads of funny stories about hanging a gondola on your wall, plastic skulls, and Harry and Simon even learn…. and then swiftly forget a new word, Japandi!

Auctioneer, collector, dad, foodie, a man who has been described by the BBC as an antiques expert, Paul Laidlaw is on the podcast today! That’s right, the man off the telly has joined Harry and Simon for a chat about Temple Auction Rooms, his appearances on Antiques Road Trip, finding Oliver Cromwell’s Rolex and his surprising connection with NASA. There’s also a round-up of Simon and Harry’s Christmas Holidays and a surprising anecdote about receiving a letter from the Peruvian Embassy.

Today on the show Simon has a rather big confession to make and Harry has been doing his best to combat the absolute silence of their recent auction. The interesting items they’ve sold this week include Baluster Chinese vases and a Louis Vuitton steamer trunk, you’ll also get to hear about what happened to the rare LEGO sets at Windsor and Lyme Bay. As usual there’s ranting on someone trying to ‘upcycle’ a lovely piece of furniture with pink chalk paint and on people devaluing your items by breaking them down for scrap. Also find out why nothing says Christmas like a machete.

Today Harry and Simon are chatting about all the silly stuff like a leaky Tesco, the wrong chandelier, how both of them are pretty clueless when it comes to cars, and needing a sturdier broom. But there’s also chat on all their fascinating auction finds including the best engraving they’ve ever seen and how nobody wants your dark wooden dining table. This week you’ll even learn a little, with the story of champion boxer Paddy Peters.

What do you get when you combine two unruly children, two dogs you didn’t ask to look after, and a shipment of 53 huge boxed LEGO sets? You get Simon’s hectic week, so at least he’s in a good mood for the podcast… Or not… But at least his microphone is the right way around now.
By contrast, Harry has had a great week getting involved in a Bargain Hunt style game with the local sixth form students. Listen in for auctioneering anecdotes on discovering an illegal eye clinic in a double garage, an Anglo-Saxon in a fruit crate, and a “barrow-metre”.

Today on the podcast, Harry and Simon chat about some of their favourite items that went up for sale last weekend as well as playing you some clips from those auctions.
Find out how much a vintage Action Man is worth if you resisted the urge to play with it and send him off to war with your other toys. Is brown antique furniture coming back into fashion? How the pair managed to make a whopping £900 on something they were told to throw in the skip. As well as stories about Harry’s sense of direction and Simon’s miserable week.

Today on the podcast Harry and Simon have a fantastic and funny guest for you, Sharon O’Connor. Following a 20 year career in fashion, Sharon re-trained with the Association of Master Upholsterers and the Cass Art Faculty of Design before starting her business, Vintique Upholstery, in 2013.
From her studio in Sunbury-on-Thames, Sharon re-upholsters pre-loved items of furniture, restoring them to their former glory, creating bespoke, statement pieces. You can find her as the Upholsterer on BBC One's Money For Nothing programme as well as appearing on podcasts and writing articles for magazines and newspapers.
She joins Harry and Simon to tell them her inspiring story of learning to do it yourself, as well as make Simon feel bad for not passing his screen test for telly, tell you what a rub count is…. No it’s not what you’re thinking, and she shares some really great resources for anyone interested in upholstery.

Simon also has an apology to make, Harry is getting a t-shirt made that says the podcast is ‘better than sex’, find out about a £5 note smuggler, and what happened when someone tried to sell the pair some tigers teeth.
If you’re a fan of the auction stories then you’ll get to hear about World War One medals, metal detector finds full of Roman antiquities, and a whole blacksmith’s workshop. How did those lots and Simon's beloved Mustang sell at auction? Listen in to find out.

This week Simon is head over heels in love, which for a married man shouldn’t come as a surprise. The surprise is that it’s with a rather lovely Ford Mustang. Also this week Harry gets his revenge by entering Simon into a charity boxing match, possibly against Conan The Barbarian. The pair also chat about having to be the deliverers of bad news, a Cypriot cab driver, and some rather expensive Royal Doulton figurines.

It’s all very exciting this week as Harry and Simon are joined by their first guest on the podcast, well, first invited guest if you exclude all the people getting in the way at the RNLI auction. Michael Hawkins of Home Care Removals stops in to tell us all about his business, his best ever finds, and gives Simon the best day ever and absolutely humiliates Harry with just one little story about a cello.

Your favourite auctioneers who aren’t on the telly every week are back from another successful sale. This week Simon and Harry dive into the topic of what, if they could turn back time, they’d specialise in. Listen in for lots of hilarious chat on Harry’s slowly deflating tyre, why Simon is yet again in trouble over Harry Potter wands, how it’s apparently easier to make thousands on Matchbox cars than it is on real ones, and an anecdote about a less than honest neighbour.

This week Harry’s not prepared anything to talk about because he was at a Coldplay gig, watching some people on exercise bikes power the stage. That means it’s up to Simon to carry the podcast….oh dear. Listen in for stories on doing a house clearance at Windsor Castle, Simon’s wild shopping habits, the Mouseman furniture motherload, and how a photo of Carrie Fisher turned into one of the sweetest auction stories.

What makes a good lot to sell at auction? Who are the weirdest bidders? And what ever happened to Simon’s irresponsible boat purchase? Those are just some of the questions Harry and Simon are answering on this week's The Gavel & The Gabble. There’s also talk on tweed, getting sent to the headteacher’s office, FOMO (fear of missing out), and Simon is on yet another holiday.

Postage! Why, oh why does nobody think about the cost of postage! Let’s face it, we've all been a bit miffed having to pay more than the cost of an item just to get it sent to us, but Harry and Simon are here to tell you why you’re wrong and why you shouldn’t blame them. As well as postage, the duo are also answering your questions on the topic of buyers remorse. Listen in to find out why the removals staff have developed a bit of a thing for wheelie bins, what happens when you steal a jam sandwich in Lyme Regis, and if you’ll get your money back for bidding on a parrot when you thought you were getting a dinner set.

This week your two favourite auctioneers are bringing you a special episode recorded at the RNLI charity auction they recently hosted in Lyme Regis. This edition is a mix of stories told from the lifeboat house as well as some of the best bits recorded live during the auction. So if you’ve never had the pleasure, or some would say displeasure of Harry and Simon trying to shake you down for another fiver, you’ll get to feel like you were there in the room.

P.S Sorry for Simon’s audio in this one, turns out a lifeboat station isn’t a good substitute for a recording studio.

ABOUT THE PODCAST
The Gavel and The Gabble is a podcast hosted by Harry and Simon who, together, are lucky enough to run two provincial Auction Houses in Windsor, Berkshire and Seaton, Devon.

We’re officially the hottest podcast in the country right now… temperature wise that is, as this episode was recorded mid-hottest day on record, poor us. This week Harry and Simon will be talking about making dreams, and breaking them by valuing items. Is the thing you’ve been collecting going to make you millions or have you just been accumulating junk? Also find out why a pastel painting of a cow by a bloke named Roy was so special.

Simon's back from holiday...well... Not quite a holiday, but he's back joining Harry to share their best loft anecdotes. As well as that unbelievably exciting topic, the pair are also going to gabble on about panning for gold, running laps of Tesco, why Harry is “one of the good fats” and whether or not Simon should be allowed to post on social media.

This week is a competitive one as Harry is feeling just a little envious of Simon and his TV gig. Listen in for stories of how an audience once stole a 5 star hotel room from the pair, why they dragged a boy (man) into an alleyway and shaved his head, if Nelson had a hammock big enough for two, and what on earth you should do if someone builds a train track on your driveway.

Ever wondered how much that old vase in the attic could go for at auction? In this episode Harry and Simon gabble on about the most expensive items they’ve ever sold at auction and how fake goods almost made it into the saleroom. Find out why Harry demands Battenberg cakes from lovely old dears, why they arranged a 4 minute trip to Paris, and how one lucky woman turned £1 into £18,000.

Join Harry and Simon as they take you behind the scenes of a real auction house, telling you what they’ve sold and who they’ve annoyed this week. Listen in to hear their weirdest stories including finding a snake named Sid in bed and turning up at a house full of nuclear waste. You’ll also learn why Simon has the most famous elbow in the UK, if muffin cookers even exist, and if some spears were just made for prodding.
