It started as nothing more than a late-'90s adventure. After finding an old website listing haunted locations around California, three teenagers hopped on their bikes to explore a historic ranch rumored to be haunted. Like most kids their age, they spent the evening daring each other, swapping ghost stories, and looking for something—anything—that might prove the legends were true.

Then, just as one of them decided to fake a paranormal moment by tossing a rock into the bushes, something unexpected happened first.
