On this episode of the Han Dynasty podcast, we follow the incredible story of Zhang Qian, the diplomat and explorer who opened the Silk Road for the Han Empire. In 138 BCE, Emperor Wu of Han sent Zhang Qian on a mission to ally with the Yuezhi against the Xiongnu — a journey that would take him across the Taklamakan Desert, over the Pamir Mountains, and into Bactria. Captured and held by the Xiongnu for a decade, Zhang Qian eventually escaped and continued west, reaching Ferghana, Sogdiana, and even hearing rumors of the Roman Empire. Though his diplomatic mission failed, his reports of wealthy kingdoms with strange customs — including the famous 'blood-sweating' Ferghana horses — sparked Emperor Wu's imagination and led to the expansion of trade routes that would shape world history. We explore the dangers of the journey, the cultures encountered, and how Zhang Qian's travels created the first true connection between East and West.
