When we think of Han China, we picture silk, jade, and great walls. But the empire's true foundation might have been wheat. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore how the Han government turned farming into a tool of control. We follow Fan Shengzhi, an agricultural official who wrote China's earliest surviving manual on farming. His methods included seed coating, crop rotation, and something called the 'ditch-field' system, which boosted yields in the arid northwest. Emperor Wu of Han ordered these techniques spread across the empire, linking agricultural productivity to military expansion. We also look at the controversial role of the 'Great Granaries' — state-run storehouses that stabilized grain prices but also gave the court immense power over local economies. And we consider the human cost: peasants whose labor fed the armies of the Xiongnu campaigns. This episode offers a ground-level view of the Han state — not from the palace, but from the fields.
