Wang Mang and the Xin Dynasty: The Han's Failed Utopian Reforms

4 min25 juli 2026

The Western Han dynasty fell not to barbarian invaders, but to a Confucian reformer. In 9 CE, Wang Mang, a trusted regent, seized the throne and declared his own Xin dynasty. Inspired by ancient texts, he attempted radical reforms: land redistribution, abolition of slavery, currency overhaul, and state monopolies. But his idealism collided with reality, sparking economic chaos, famine, and massive rebellions like the Red Eyebrows. Within 14 years, the Xin dynasty collapsed, and Wang Mang died in his palace. The Han was restored under the Guangwu Emperor, ushering in the Eastern Han. This episode explores Wang Mang's rise, his well-intentioned but disastrous policies, and the lessons of his failed utopia.
